Speaking of rolled, one item they don’t mention in the article is the likelihood of being rolled by undesirables when walking home obviously drunk in urban areas. The low lifes of the world find it much easier to chase down and beat up a drunk to commit their crimes than they do against sober and attentive pedestrians. A buddy of mine was once rolled by such low lifes while walking home drunk and they took away his Philadelphi Flyers gold chain. Yeah, pub crawls are safer while you’re on them with all those other people around, but at the end of the evening, they rarely take you home.
So Gladwell was right…it is safer to drink and drive than it is to drink and walk! Of course, that is not true for the victims of the DUI. But I do like the idea that the drunk does not “walk away unscathed”.
I’m not so sure that texting while walking is not more dangerous than drinking and walking. People are so distracted by their iphone their eyes never look up. I have had to dodge them on the sidewalk or at the mall and have heard of cases where the individual stepped right out into traffic and were hit by a car.
Perhaps the Police can dream up another ticket for WUI. The texting can be TUI. Some of these people are from another planet the way they act. This is really a problem that many ignore. Carrying their cell is like Linus and his blanket on Charlie Brown.
Good idea Sargent. Some parties have designated drivers to get people home safely. They say that nothing good happens after midnight and on New Years, it often does.

So then the other 71% were completely sober & hit by cars? Isn’t that even more alarming?
Perhaps the 71% sober walkers were hit by drunk drivers. Also, maybe the 71% sober walkers were texting while walking and stepped out in front of cars.
Right Dave. I plan on staying in myself and not having the opportunity to get run over. Another one I forgot to mention was that some of the pedestrians hit may have been hit by someone driving while texting. We know that a lot of accidents happen due to the extreme distraction of cell phones. Their eyes have a hard time watching the road when they are texting at the same time.
Recently saw an ad on TV (of which I only caught a small part) where the car prevents texting from a moving vehicle. I’m generally not a big fan of government over-regulation and worry about taking that right away from passengers in a car, but any time I see a person not driving too well or going slowly in the left (passing) lane I always look over to see if they’re on their phone. Nine times out of ten they are. Because of those idiots I might support legislation which requires phone makers and car makers to co-ordinate their efforts to design cars and phones so that phones won’t work in a moving car. I hate over-regulations, but I also hate stupid accidents caused by stupid drivers.

Pedestrians get hit all the time, drunk or sober. Just watch your step out there. I wonder how many were hit while texting or talking on their cell phones.
Dave, I think the addiction to cells is so great now that it is much worse than alcohol addiction. I saw a woman at the grocery store last week. She got out of her car while on it, went through the entire store and check out and back to her car and was never off her cell. What is wrong with that picture? When not talking, they are texting back and forth. I am sure our wonderful government will do some regulation since that is what they do. They want to track everyone and eavesdrop on calls.
I hate to sound old-fashioned or like my parents, but how did we survive as a race for thousands of years without a cell phone attached to our heads. I personally have a minimal voice plan and 200 texts per month and never come close to using up my voice minutes and sometime go over my texts counts during the summer as I go to a lot of baseball games where I’m texting friends also at the game in different seats about what we’re seeing on the field. Like I said I SOMETIMES go over. Others text 100 times a day, those people need a life.
Some of these Blue Tooth people are going to find out about brain cancer at some point. It can’t be a good thing having cell waves going through your brain all the time and will eventually cause problems. I don’t mind being old fashioned and only use my cell very occasionally. They come in handy if you have an emergency or need to call at the office if the land lines go down for some reason.

I’ve been involved with insuring cell phone manufacturers and can tell you without any fear of contradiction that they do not cause cancer. There are so many things which cause a greater chance of cancer that we use every day without worry that I don’t know where to begin. I can tell you that certain Bluetooth devices can lead to hearing loss, that any trauma to the part of the head where the Bluetooth device is inserted can drive it further into your head, that having a Bluetooth device may prevent you from “hearing” a warning that could lead to a serious accident. But cancer? No way. Much like the farce put upon us from silicone breast implants which are back in style now that science has proven that to be a hoax which made a bunch of ambulance chasers rich.
Wait for it, here it comes…….DUH!
That’s why the safest event is a pub crawl; limited expectations and loss prevention, all rolled into one big hot mess.

That one sounds more likely to blame on the inattentive driver, unless your friend was walking backwards!
