Seriously…..have you ever been to one of these “indian tribe reservations”? The ones I have been to in Oklahoma are bascially the slums. Take some of that money, have pride, and clean up the land you are supposedly so proud of!! They basically consist of filthy shacks and casinos that in turn take more of their money. When is our country ever going to wake up and figure out you cannot help people that don’t want to help themselves. I have done countless hours of volunteer and community service and it’s just the way it is. People don’t want a hand up, they want a hand out!
The Indians have been on the government dole for so long, that is all they know. I think it is called reparations for what the white man did to them back in the 1800’s. The government set up the Bureau of Indian affairs to get all the benefits rolling. Some of these tribes wised up and realized they could set up casinos on the reservations without state approval. Some have cleaned up (with mob help). I didn’t know they still had such a presence in the N/E. I thought most had been forced out and moved to Indian territory in Oklahoma and elsewhere. If anyone ever goes to Anadarko, Ok, it is kind of scary how they live.
We have noticed how the Obama Administration has cut the red tape for the Sandy victims. Those people have been living in tents for months now, but Indians are used to living in tents so they are probably ok.
I support the funding for Sandy victims other than the millions of dollars in pork that was attached to it. That was shameful given our current financial condition.
This is a good action on the part of the President and the federal government, which has a very long history of betraying and deceiving the American Indian people. Too many people, including those who have commented above, cast judgments on the basis of bias and inadequate information. I have worked with tribes across the country for 40 years and am committed to working with them until the day I die–to help keep promises long since broken, to learn from their wisdom and vision and to help build bridges of understanding between them and other Americans, who truly have much to learn from them.
With all due respect, within all your wisdom and visions, did you happen to learn that U.S. citizens are paying dearly for the long history of betrayal and for the deceiving you mention that stemmed from our government, that Native Americans do not want to let go of … through Native American Midewiwin who are using guerrilla tactics against innocent people?

It appears that when it benefits the Native American reservations then they get federal funding but when there is no benefit to the Native American reservation then they claim tribal law and protection wanting no part of it. Does not seem right to me.
You are right Sargent. They want it both ways. I had to laugh at that female Senator in Massachusetts who claimed to have Indian blood to get more votes, but couldn’t prove it. Just about everyone in Oklahoma has some Indian blood, but most don’t try to obtain benefits because of it.
