    Hey Agent,

Since you like to reference poll numbers so much, what does it say that more people are against shutting down the government to defund the ACA than those who are against the ACA? I will venture a guess that you will find a way to discredit this poll since it does not support your narrative.

The 22% for the shutdown to defund the ACA is about the size of the House Republican suicide bomber caucus. It also means that 22% of these obstructionists are negatively impacting the other 78% of the nation.

This does not bode well for them in the general election in 2016 as extremists on any side of the political spectrum cannot — and will not win an election.

“They oppose the health-care law by 47 percent to 45 percent.”
I could be reading that wrong, but doesn’t that indicate that more Americans ARE against the ACA? I am not a fan of the ACA, but I agree, the GOP is shooting themselves in the foot with this shutdown and it’s going to seriously hurt them in 2016.

I’m not that far off the mark. I stand corrected abut my first statement, but 47% to 45% is really too close to call.

But it is overwhelmingly evident the American people are fed up with Republicans attempting to hold this country hostage over it.

The way I see it, the House (and therefore republicans) is actually being held hostage by the Senate and Exec branch. They have asked for meetings to try and come to a compromised agreement and were denied. I think this is a desperate, last ditch (and ultimately, ineffective) attempt to try and show the public that they have no input into general policy and are basically being swept aside as decision makers. This was the only card they still had in their hand. I don’t support a lockout, things should have been handled well before this, but I understand why they’re doing it.

Okay, I’m not the brightest crayon in the box but why do the Republicans and the Tea Party get blamed for a government shutdown? Why doesn’t the press view the Demo’s refusal to separate the ACA out as the reason for the shutdown? Also this writer says that there will be a “fine”, didn’t the Supreme Court say it was constitutional because it was a “tax”? With the ACA now in motion and all the companies (IBM, Walgreens etc..) dumping their employees and/or spouses health care plans I think that bell is about to get rung.

            Ben,

You can see it any way you want. Both sides are holding each other hostage. The Republican House has indicated that they will not pass a bill that does not defund the ACA and the Democratic Senate has indicated that they will not pass a bill that defunds the ACA. What is there to negotiate?

If people want to have input, they need to be prepared to vote for the challenger, regardless of party affiliation or whether or not they like their representative, in EVERY election. The only way we the people can send a clear message is to “vote the bums out” including your own.

Your statement “They have asked for meetings to try and come to a compromised agreement and were denied.” is naive at best. They have extended a carefully crafted olive branch in an effort to APPEAR to be trying to negotiate. The compromise they offer is a delay in implementing Obamacare in return for short-term government funding. Short-term enough to tide them over until the 2014 elections, in which they think they will take control Congress and repeal Obamacare.

Don’t fall for the wolf in sheep’s clothing.

            Dear Original Bob:

The Republican and Tea Party gets the blame as they created a false platform on which to withhold the budget and shut the government. If they don’t like the law, then they need to go through the same channels that passed it to amend it.

But being spoiled little boys and girls who are stomping their feet in the candy aisle of the supermarket because mommy or daddy won’t cave in to that big double bag of holloween candy is just a tantrum. Public tantrum — but a tandrum nevertheless.

The Democrats only have to sit back and watch Republican v. Republican as the ACA is the law of the land. There is nothing to negotiate.

Let the ACA go through, but only if ALL of the waivers are cancelled and the Congress is also subject to it – otherwise let’s have the shutdown. Either everyone suffers (or benefits, according to some) or nobody does – ONLY FAIR.
The administration knows that if the waivers are overturned (and they too are subject to it), they don’t have a chance in any future election that includes any conversation about this law. THAT is what I hope the Republicrats hold out for – only that. That will be enough.

Ok, just read this in The Atlantic Wire:

“Rep. Tom Cotton of Arkansas, who’s running for Senate in 2014, tried to sign up for healthcare as well, but got an error message full of code…. (Like all members of Congress, Cotton initially had health care under the Federal Employee Benefit Health Plan. Before Obamacare was passed, Sen. Chuck Grassley insisted on making members of Congress and their staff lose their employer contribution to their health insurance and sign up for coverage on an Obamacare exchange. As this amounts to a pay cut for staffers already making relatively low salaries, it has become quite controversial.)”

Congress and their staffers ARE subject to the ACA.

It was not a landslide, and the re-election was not a sign of validation of Obamacare, it was basically the lesser of two evils to the public.

For the vast majority of it’s passage, the affordable healthcare law has been viewed more unfavorably than favorably.

If someone is non-essential and does not perform any useful task, move them out. Taxpayers do not need to be paying for dead wood and pencil pushers pushing pencils just to push pencils. We have an opportunity to reduce the budget by reducing irrelevant workers.

    To quote Poll’s website:

From September 23 – 29, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,497 registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.5 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Iowa, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Virginia and the nation as a public service and for research.

So this entire article is based on polling 1497 voters in generally liberal, Eastern states for the most part. I have to wonder how many independent or conservative voters were polled?

I did read the bill twice and 332 to 206 is pretty much kicking arse. The law is for those that are uninsured. So, if an employer already has a plan in place, they are exempt from the ACA. Same went for Congressional members until Chuck Grassley, in 2009, had a provision put in the law making members get insurance through the exchanges (except for committee members). So, if you do your homework, you will find in the law, “Notwithstanding any other provision of the law, after the effective date of this subtitle, the only health plans that the Federal Government may make available to Members of Congress and Congressional staff with respect to their service as a Member of Congress or congressional staff shall be health plans that are – (1) created under this Act (or an Amendment made by this Act); or (2) offered thorugh an Exchange established under this Act (or an Amendment made by this Act).
You must have missed the part about large employers in the law as well as this piece about Congress. Perhaps you should take another look. All this screaming is a heck of a lot about nothing. And, it’s going to kill the GOP. Especially since having Congress included in this law was furthered by a member of the GOP (who also told us there are death panels in the ACA).

Don’t believe me, go to any fact checker out there. This is as big of a lie as “government takeover of healthcare.”

Exempt from the ACA? I can give you a list of 100+ employers (over 50 employees) that will disagree AND prove you wrong. The law, as designed, destroys the system of employer provided health insurance in the small company arena – it’s already happening.

But, again, if you’re right – GET RID OF THE WAIVERS!

Ultimately, this is designed to push the system to Federalized Healthcare – a National Health Insurance System. 2+2=4.

One of our groups with 130 employees is going to be paying more than $2,000,000 for their group health plan and in 2014 add a $70,000 tax for providing that coverage. This is CRAP!! So let me get this straight. The “Affordable” Care Act requires an increase in the debt ceiling…. or should that be another increase in the debt ceiling because we can’t afford it??? In true American colors 78% of the people in our country feel that we should allow our government to go further into debt to prove that we can afford to pay for Obamacare. The baby boomers parents knew how to control their spending, they didn’t buy what they couldn’t afford. That should be the same in our government as in our households. Guess I support the 22%!

That would be fine, Dan, if we hadn’t already spent it. We only need an increase in the debt ceiling to pay bills that have already been incurred. Since when is it American to welch on your debts and be a deadbeat?

I agree we need to trim spending, but we can’t do that if the government is shut down. Not to mention the effect of another hit to our credit rating. And all the money that is not being spent in the economy because government workers are not being paid.

If we have another downgrade of our credit rating, when we end up increasing the debt ceiling (because we will) it will cost us that much MORE money to borrow. We have to increase the debt ceiling and then demand that Congress get their act together and do what’s right by the American people.

In fact the only reason they want an increase in the debt ceiling is because they don’t want to actually have to pay their bills. It is like getting a new credit card with a higher limit and using it to pay off your last credit card.

And we won’t be downgraded again after the government went after the S&P with a retaliation suit after last time. Their extortionist message got across to them I am sure.

What we need to do is not raise the debt ceiling and just force them to cut spending now, not give them another bump and make them promise to quit their addiction tomorrow. That is how you demand of Congress, take their money away. The functional services of Gov’t aren’t as expensive as they like to make them out to be, they still have tax revenues of what close to 17 trillion? I am sure they can manage and maybe become more efficient in the process.

You are correct, Captain Planet, that Congress and Congressional staffers did not receive a “waiver” from the ACA. The part you missed, however, was that when they found out how much their new healthcare was going to cost, they complained and received an exemption from the income limit that would knock them out of the subsidy to pay for coverage in the exchanges. Therefore, they get the subsidy no matter what their income is. That’s fair.

The ACA was passed by a bunch of dimwits many of whom never even read the bill and plenty of legislators were either bribed, coerced, or blackmailed into voting yes in voting for the bill. The vast majority of those I have spoken to who are in favor of this horrible bill think that medical care will now be free and everyone will be covered. They are blissfully unaware of the costs to the American public and they have no clue as to how AARP, Congress, Unions, and others have obtained waivers exempting them from ACA.

How sad that our nation has become a bunch of wimpy parasites who want more and more freebies that will be paid for by the evil rich.

BTW- Before his election in 2008, Barry Obama said loudly and publicly that his ultimate goal is a government run single payer system. I also saw him at least twice say the same thing early in his first term.

Libby and all of her socialist friends have had no first hand experience dealing with a government run single payer system. I have. All of my middle age and older family in the UK are now dead because of healthcare rationing. I now have no living relatives that I know of.

Railing against this incredibly stupid, complex, and evil program certainly does not make one an extreme right winger. It is irresponsible to cede one’s rights to a monolithic and tyrannical federal government that looks more and more like the old Soviet Union.

Do I support a government shutdown aimed at delaying the ACA? No, not really, seems like lame party line politics by Repubs to link the two.

However, I do support a government shutdown in general so I am not going to complain much. Defunding wasteful spending is the big picture to me not defunding the ACA (although that would arguably qualify as wasteful).

Why is the postal service still open though? Don’t get that at all, let that one shutdown for good.

What the Tea Party element of the Republican party is doing is not to craft a solution but to defund the ACA. Period. That is not an attempt at a solution but sour grapes. At this point, there is nothing to debate about the ACA as is is now law.

BTW, I am amused by the Republican House attempts to approve and pass through little bits and pieces of the budget — except ACA. This is laughable — as it is clear that they will parcel up the budget in small chunks and hope no one is aware that the only part they won’t pass through has to do with the ACA. If the House Republicans were an Insurance company, they’d be charged with bad faith.

So much for negotiating in good faith.

Celtica- I was glued to my TV when ACA was being crafted because I knew from personal experience how devastating this bill would be even though the contenets of the bill were kept secret. Republican alternatives or modifications of what was known to be in the bill were rejected without debate or discussion. The bill was crafted when the White House and the legislature were all run by Left Wing robots who were drunk with power. They didn’t have to discuss or negotiate with the opposition so they didn’t. The Harpy Queen Nancy Pelossi said hey, we won so you guys shut up even though she didn’t know what the bill contained.

Yes the ACA is now law but any law can be repealed or defunded. Mr. Obama has said publically more than once that it is a path to a single payer government run system.

I remember well when the hero of Chappaquidick, Ted Frogman Kennedy praised the formation of HMO’s because he felt that they would be so cumbersome they would fail and a single payer government system could be put in place someday.

No government run program has ever been successful and wisely managed. Have you ever dealt with the VA ? The ACA is already going to cost 3 times what it was supposed to and it’s only just begun.

Healthcare reform is certainly needed bt the ACA isn’t the answer.

I want the government to get the heck out of my life and I don’t want socialism to continue creeping into my country.

Ted Kennedy blocked single payer. We’d have it today otherwise, since back then Republicans supported it too. The individual mandate, the alleged horrible communist plot, was written by the Heritage Foundation in the 90s and introduced as legislation by the Republican party.

But by all means, go back to listening your AM radio. I think they even have a talk program in between all those ads for silver bars, social security scams, and mens enhancement products.

Waterbug – the PPACA is the Heritage Foundation’s response to Hillarycare back in the Bob Dole days. They came up with the idea of the individual mandate (the one item that makes the law poll infavorably – besides the President’s name being attached to it, of course).

Ever heard of Jim DeMint? He touted Romneycare and backed Romney for President back in 2007 saying, “…and as Governor of Massachusetts that he can solve a problem. Not by creating more government, but by making freedom work for everyone. He’s done it with health care…” Remember, Romneycare is set up much the same as the ACA. Jim was for it before he was against it. Typical of any politician, don’t care which side.

If you want to be mad at anyone for the PPACA, you should be mad at The Right, Jim DeMint, and The Heritage Foundation for creating it and supporting it in the first place. Foolish of President Obama to think The Republicans would be for a bill they were in support of before turning against it. Yes, I know, convoluted, isn’t it? Politics…

President Obama should have gone further, gave us single payer or at least a public option. That’s what he was running on and that’s one major reason I voted for him. As well as a majority of Americans. He fell short and thought he would have the support of the party that created the Act in the first place. This was just the beginning of the obstruction that will be historically studied for years to come.

There is a reason they have different names.

The PPACA was not made by anyone other than Obama. The republicans were against it, when Obama said “you ride in the back”. If they were for it, they would have voted for it, whether now or during Clinton debate (which didn’t pass)

You can’t say that because some of the right mentioned it that it is a republican ideal.

Those of us in the insurance industry must be united in fighting ACA. The requirement that 80% of premium dollars be paid in healthcare benefits would affect our whole culture. How would United Health ever again be able to pay their CEO $110 million in compensation, Aetna pay their recently retired CEO $63 million, or Wellpoint pay theirs $11 million if premium money has to be diverted to claims? Also, doesn’t anyone recognize that the pilots who fly Health Insurance owned/leased corporate jets might lose their jobs if ACA gains traction? Please, join Ted Cruz, John Boehner and the rest of the Republicans willing to shut down our government to protect the perks and profits of the Health Insurance industry!

Libby: Correctomundo. Let’s look at a billing for an X-ray procedure. Think patient gets one bill? No. You can be billed separately for:

            Equipment
            Supplies
            Technican to read it
Doctor to explain it to you

And that’s on the low end. All profit centers.

So, if health care went to a single BILLER, it would prove to be a cost saving measure.

with my wife racking up the visits, I just cant keep up with who did what with her. When I ask, she cant give me a definitive answer. For every trip to the hospital for what ever (X Ray, MRI) the send a different bill for every visit instead of one Account type bill.

    Hey ExciteBiker-

I watched Ted Kennedy in a news interview praising the idea of a single payer system more than once. He said it might take more than one generation to achieve such a system. Mr. Obama has said more than once that he prefers a single payer system

The Feds are spying on all of us and the IRS is going to run the ACA.

The IRS is persecuting conservatives (ask Dr. Ben Carson) and you cluless libs don’t see Uncle Sam trying to take control of your lives.

Oh well. When the ACA boffins start cutting off your meds and denying surgery, it will be too late.

Am I for universal healthcare for all Americans? Yes! Do I think the ACA is the best way to accomplish that? No! That doesn’t mean you throw the baby out with the bath water. The ACA is a start. It needs to be amended and changed. Let’s work on doing that instead of snarking at each other.

And by the way, tell me how to opt out of being paid less than men for doing the same job?

Don’t like how much you get paid, get another job and stop blaming other people. Work on commission and earn what you are worth unless you think you are not worth much. You see, only you know how much you are really worth.

Jack, you are right, I could work on commission — I choose not to. I also choose not to have abortions – and not go to the emergency room for non emergency issues. I choose to have medical insurance.

Now, if only men would choose to wear condoms, women would not be faced with the tough choice of mostly going it alone. And so it goes with medical insurance. Men in particular hate going to the doctors — so why would they buy medical insurance? They only buy auto insurance because they are forced to.

Life continues to be unfair. Women deal with that fact every day. And so should you.

I’ll have to disagree with you on the marraige issue. The word marraige is not synonymous with religion. Since a man & woman can marry in the county judge’s office, the word marraige doesn’t mean married in a church or even with God’s blessing. Otherwise, all those married atheists would be having a cow.

It goes on to say that Marriages in a religious setting last on average 7.81 years while in a civil setting last only 5.13 years according to a study done in 1938….

Jw- he asked for a non religious reason. I did not state any religious reason.

I was married outside the church. My wife previous was not inulled. She did not want to convert. She has many issues with the teachings of catholic church. As a result, I do not accept communion. It has not been any sort of issue for me personally.

Libby, the only people that influence my marriage are my wife and I.

I guess I am old school as you can tell by the publish date on the dictionary I referenced (I have an older one too). I am not against them committing to each other.

As Libby has demonstrated, there are definitions for “marriage” that do not designate man and woman but rather, consenting adults or 2 people. So, I still need that non-religious reason.

Cap – Random House & Webster dictionaries are not religious publications. Nor – to my knowledge – do they have religious ties.

Jack – judging by your website, and the fact that you only represent 5 small-time regional carriers, you can’t possibly make more money than I do. And I’m certain, since I have no children to deduct, that I pay more in taxes than you do. You know what they say about assuming, don’t you?

            Here endeth the lesson.

FFA – I’m sure if we looked at an 1812 dictionary we would find some pretty interesting definitions, too. But it’s now 2013 and that definition has changed. Still not sure what the big deal is about it, if as you say you don’t have a problem with same-sex marriage.

Well Libby, I guess I missed that memo. My problem with this is the way people just change the meaning of words to fit their whims / needs and desires.

Okay, FFA – then do your dictionaries say that homosexuals shouldn’t be allowed to marry? I guess I don’t get how those examples are non-religious reasons why they CANNOT get married. Especially when there are just as many examples of marriage definitions which do not designate specifically b/t man and woman.

Cap says : “Okay, FFA – then do your dictionaries say that homosexuals shouldn’t be allowed to marry?”.

No Cap. Its a dictionary. All it does is define the meaning of a word. It makes no mention of religion in the definition of marriage. Webster offered the results of a study done, but that is a dictionary/encyclopedia.
Unless I missed the memo that changed the meaning of the word dictionary???? I only put that in there because I was surprised that, back in them days, the length of marriage seemed way short to me.
Even the word homosexual makes no reference to religion in either dictionary.

I’m an old dog cap. I don’t like new tricks….

PS: That bond thingy sure sounds mandatory.

The bond is mandatory if you don’t want insurance and you follow the law. Thats the part where you idiots on the left don’t get it. You see, only law abiding citizens follow laws. Like gun laws! Given there are millions of people that have not paid taxes in years, you Dems think you can tax someone into getting health ins. NOT! And again thats where the Obumcareless model falls apart. Now you can either think that Dems already know this will cause us to go bankrupt or not. But that does not change the fact it will.

Jack, you have some serious anger there. Even if you don’t want healthcare insurance, you will probably need it for the heart attack you are about to give yourself.

Manning needed every yard and TD to beat my fantasy team this week. The guy scored an outstanding 38 points against me and I lost by 6. Ive got the Denver kicker. So, one less TD and one more FG, I win…. But, if if and if….

I cant wait to see Indy Denver coming up… Battle tested vet vs the up and coming soon to be next Peyton….. Been there, done that vs Bring it on Old Man!!!!

In the older dictionary, Marry is defined as (this will draw some fire) to dispose of (as in a father his daughter)….
HMMM. That’s a tactic I should try with my daughter. Get her married and out of the house. Now, if I could just find someone to put up with that lazy ass bitch……..

Wow. I just looked in to see if there had been any well thought out comments on either side of the Obamacare issue and I see that the discussion has morphed into arguments about same sex marriage.

The American public (at least the IJ bunch) seems to be too easily distracted and cannot follow an issue to resolution.
