Dave, what benefit do you think the U.S. will get from allowing TransCanada to build the Keystone XL? The plan is to use the U.S. breadbasket as a sewer line to take this disgusting Canadian tar to the free trade zone so they can export it to China. The benefit to the U.S. only exists in the imaginations of the TransCanadian lobbyists. The jobs created by pipeline construction will be very limited in number and duration, and domestic fuel prices are actually expected to increase should the line be built.

Political hack? Of course. You don’t get to be President without being a political animal. Obama is absolutely a political hack. But IMHO, the real hack move would be for him to highlight the environment as his legacy issue (as he has done in his most major speeches) and then turn around and tell Kerry to approve XL.

But no, we should not build the pipe, because it does not benefit the United States to do so. If Canada wants to export its nasty caustic tar–so thick it cannot be transported down the pipe without substantial heating & mixing with chemicals–to China then let them build the pipeline across their own country. That is the real question– if Canada wants this so darn bad, why won’t they build the pipe on their own land? No, they want to build it over the Ogallala Aquifer- the main water source for the majority of our agricultural output.
