What has been invented here? Data mapping is not a novel concept.

Instead of running press releases for this company, InsuranceJournal could be writing articles discussing software patents and whether their existence is fundementally adverse to public policy. It should question whether patents such as the one in this article could be used to stifle competitors in the online insurance marketplace or put a toll booth on innovation. Does this patent threaten existing data solutions in the marketplace such as Vertafore’s TransactNOW?

I think we should encourage technology investment in the insurance industry. Innovation will not come to the industry if software manufacturers can not protect their inventions. Patents are very prevalent in the online world and I don’t think we can say that google or apple are stifling innovation just because they have a trove of patents. Quite the opposite. I am sure we could argue that Amazon has not invented anything since we could buy books before they came along. There has to be a better way to transact insurance online. We should encourage true investment in technology in the insurance industry.

Maybe the Federal Exchange could use this product.
