Some of you weather experts please explain the difference between EL Nino & La Nina. Perhaps some of the Pacific warming is the result of the radiation coming out of Japan after their nuclear disaster.

      Smog from China?

Strange. I didn’t know smog made the ocean warmer! Maybe Al Gore has been swimming in the Pacific since he moved to LA.

Radiation from Japan is probalby no more responsible for warming oceans than smog from China.

El Nino is a temporary but significant warming of the water in the equatorial regions of the Pacific Ocean. (Temporary meaning on the order of a few months up to 1-2 years.) La Nina is a temporary but significant cooling of water in the same region.

Thanks Wes, a voice of reason. I’m glad you said temporary warming or cooling of the water when describing the phenomena. Some on the kook fringe think everything is getting hotter all the time. I guess they haven’t experienced the Polar Vortex over Canada or been to Antarctica lately.

El Nino doesn’t exist; it’s junk science. Those scientists are always coming up with crazy ideas, like trying to get us to believe that humans have been around for more than 6,000 years.

Also, Alaska didn’t really experience temperatures in the 40’s when the Polar Vortex dipped into the lower U.S. That was just liberal media lies. The ski resorts in Alaska didn’t have any problems with melting snow; they were lying.

Kidding aside, the real kook fringe are those who think that lack of global warming suddenly makes pollution ok. Global warming or no global warming, pollution is still just as harmful as it was before the global warming debate took center stage. It continues to get worse every year. Future generations aren’t going to be too concerned about debt when they don’t have any water to drink. Perspective.

Excellent point, Don’t Call Me Shirley. Kind of what I’ve been trying to say all along. Why not be a good steward of the planet (whether or not you believe in science)? Some on the fringe Right believe humans are the top of the food chain. They need to realize, Earth is above us on of the food chain. We, and everything else that dies/decomposes, feeds it. And, everything we pollute it with poisons it. The planet is going to be around a lot longer than we are.

            Careful, Shirley.

Wackos are going to read your first 2 paragraphs and agree with you before they read the 3rd.

No doubt, insurance is fun!. They’re so funny. For my next trick, maybe I’ll declare war on Christmas. They’ll be thinking, “I knew it was a real thing!” Better yet…

Climate change is NOT a real thing.
The war on Christmas IS a real thing.

Yes, Agent. In other words, El Nino and La Nina are weather phenomena. But, I understand you are still confused about weather vs. climate. Must not have taken the time to educate yourself on the difference yet.

How foolish and short sighted we are to continue using fossil fuels. We are despoiling the land with fracking, much as we did with coal mining. When the finite resource runs out, then where are we?

We should be deleting any tax benefits to fossil fuel providers and encouraging alternatives, especially solar and geothermal (wind farms are ugly and harm wild life). Just imagine if every rooftop were fitted with solar panels BY LAW how much we would reduce our usage of fossil fuels drastically and be truly using a renewable resource since the sun rises every day. We also would become energy independent. Retrofitting solar panels or installing geothermal would create jobs that have to be on US soil. AND, so as not to defeat the purpose, we should demand solar panels be produced in this country if the govt would be providing subsidies (which is where we should be putting our tax dollars and not subsidizing oil companies, many of which are foreign owned.

Even in most winter climate states, we get enough sun in spring, summer, fall to allow fossil fuel use to be greatly reduced. I envision using solar as prime source with fossil as back up source…a hybrid system.

Exactly right, Cassandra. We need to be investing in clean energy alternatives. Start making the transition now. Instead, we have President Obama leaning toward the thought the pipeline will not have a negative environmental impact. Give me a break. I am guessing it has more to do with the jobs the pipeline can offer. Any American who thinks a majority of that oil is going to stay at home to help combat gas prices is fooling himself/herself. The conversation needs to be about cutting off our dependence on oil, in a clean way, and with renewable resources. Then, we will not only create a new booming industry in the US, we will also become energy independent.

There should be a law: “What’s drilled in U.S. stays in U.S.” But our goal should be to eventually be able to run everything on solar. It will take time, but if we don’t get moving, we’ll be having the same tired argument 10 years from now. Likewise, if we had made more effort 10 years ago, we’d be in much better shape right now.

If oil company leaders were smart (and actually worth at least 1/10 of what they get paid), they’d be all over solar, so they could be ahead of the game. It’s dis-heartening to see incompetent morons make out like bandits.
