So if the P&C Industry is doing so well, why are they treating it like a very hard market with large rate increases even for the cleanest customers? I know. They are doing this for future expected losses. Need to get those reserves on up there.

I guess I must be doing something right Bob since I keep churning out a profit each and every year despite the market churning from soft to hard every three years and the monumental mess the government has made over the past 10 years. My carriers seem to like me since I make contingency with most of them each year and that is tied to Production and Loss Ratio. Texas is a weather state and you never know when a hail or windstorm will get you, but we have been fortunate and we offer the protection customers need. Our E&O premiums are very good since we haven’t reported any claims in over 5 years and that one was bogus and not paid but it had to be defended.

So is this an attempt at saying that agent is a hypocrite?

He didn’t fit into your labels for republicans and now you can’t handle it?

There is a difference between being against harmful taxes against corporations, and being against companies raising rates without reason. Of course, the ones who are raising rates are going to lose that business to the higher priced products. That’s the beauty of competition.

However, if you tax all those companies because the rates are too high, you aren’t going to lower the cost of insurance, you aren’t going to harm the CEO’s profits, as he can then rely that all his competition will also raise the premium exactly as much as him to offset taxes, and you just resulted in a select group by the government receiving the taxes.

Think QE: Lowered interest rates, but mortgage insurance rates went up, because it inflated the cost of houses. House payments are equal when adding in mortgage insurance. Look into a house refinance. I just did. So all that happened is the government took 2.4 trillion dollars in 4 years, and threw it at banks. You want more money going to causes like that? I don’t. If anything, that same money should have gone to homeowners who couldn’t afford their homes. 2.4 trillion could have been better spent. It didn’t change the event for home owners at all in terms of actual payments on their loan, and it kept their amount they needed to borrow higher due to higher housing costs. It did increase debt though. Without reason.

We need more of that eh?

txmouthbreather would have probably made that comment whether it was Agent, Libby or Captain Planet talking about rate increases. It was a snarky comment aimed at the insurance companies’ decision to take rate increases – not at Agent or the fact that he’s a Republican, or taxes for corporations.

Agent said he didn’t like companies being greedy. txmouthbreather came back saying that saying that people who DIDN’T support greedy CEO’s were commies. It was a JOKE, you jackass. Maybe not a good one, but a joke nonetheless. And the fact that you jumped from a stupid joke about insurance companies’ rate increases to YET ANOTHER long-winded monologue about labeling Republicans and taxing corporations (which had absolutely NOTHING to do with the conversation) is ridiculous.

You want to talk about labeling and preconceived notions, Bob? How about you look in the mirror. You see everyone who doesn’t agree with you completely as someone who hates and wants to destroy you. You are so desperate to play the poor, misunderstood victim that you read every comment hoping for insults. And when they aren’t there, you just make them up to fit your narrative. You make these absurd leaps of logic that make absolutely no sense. Someone says that they don’t like cheeseburgers, and the next thing we know, you’re blasting them for labeling all Republicans as evil and accusing them of wanting to kill unborn babies.

You know… Because hamburger comes from cows… and cows live on cattle ranches… and Texas has a lot of cattle ranches… and you know Texas is a red state… and Texas had all that drama over the anti-abortion bill… and liberals are pissed off that they lost, so they want to punish the Republicans for trying to save unborn babies… so obviously THAT’S why that awful liberal idiot says he doesn’t like cheeseburgers. You know he’s lying. Everyone likes cheeseburgers. He just wants to make Republicans look bad by sating he doesn’t like something that comes out of a red state. And he said he liked steak last week. So of COURSE he likes cheeseburgers. He’s obviously lying. HE JUST WANTS TO KILL BABIES!!!

Take off the tin foil hat, Bob. Sometimes a stupid joke about rate increases is just a stupid joke about rate increases and not an indictment of something more.

    Agent,
Some carriers are doing stupid things. Unfortunately, that is why you are seeing rate increases. I am a referral underwriter on large accounts for a major carrier in New York. We started taking average rate increases of 5-7% on all renewal accounts (regardless of premium/losses) to help improve our underwriting gains.
When many of the adverse accounts went away because of new capital (and some of the desired accounts as well), we modified our rate increases to a 1-3% increase on average per line. In fact, depending on the premium size of the account, we would sometimes stay flat.
I don’t think the market will remain that hard for 2014. Tough lines (ex. D&O) are seeing rates coming in close to flat, and WC/EL renewals depending on class of business and modification factors are also competitively priced.
I guess underwriters and producers have a different perspective of the market :)

Unfortunately 102, us agents are the ones that have to look a customer in the eye and try to explain a 10-15% rate hike to them with no claims in the past 10 years. Brokers and company people never have that experience since the customer is just an account number in their computer and they take impersonal to a new level. Yes, Standard Markets are doing this. Excess/Surplus lines, not so much since their rates are already high by comparison.

Dear Ron, I have been at this for over 30 years and have seen every up and down the market can throw at me. In previous hard markets, at least the economy was decent. Now, we have the combination of a poor economy, poor government leadership and a hard market. That is a phenomenon most of us have not seen in our adult lifetimes. By the way, I would much rather have my own business, be the master of my fate than stuck in a 4X4 cubicle like you are taking orders from the guy in the corner office. If you had to hit the streets and bring business in to put together and then sell it, you would fail big time within a year and have to switch career fields.

I represent a number of companies and talk to company people, underwriters all the time. They are good people, but couldn’t sell their way out of a paper bag. That is why they are company people and we are agents. By the way, they must like our agency a lot since we got nice Contingencies with the vast majority. We submit nice accounts with low loss ratios to them and they write and retain them. I wonder how long Ron & 102 would last on the street if they had to sell something to a business client with 3 competitors. My guess is, not for long.

Have you identified their hot button that you can use to sell the account or are you just an order taker from an agent who has done all the preliminary work to make a submission to you? A lot of accounts will let you quote, but they may mislead you and are really only keeping their agent honest. No, I didn’t think so.

            Agent,

Yes I have. I started as a producer for an agency as was a top producer. I wanted to learn more about underwriting so I earned my CPCU. Then I worked for a large regional carrier in product management where I learned all about underwriting, coverage forms and ratemaking. I am now a broker for high net worth homeowners where I have the highest hit ratio and have written the most premium. Mostly because I understand underwriting and only submit applications that have a good shot of getting quoted and written. I don’t waste my time on accounts that have little or no chance. that gives me more time to focus on good accounts and my accounts have a high retention rate even when there are rate increases. I do not fear difficult conversations because I have the knowledge and experience to handle them.

As I have said many times, you know nothing about me. Stop trying to act like you do.

    Agent,
Agred that you have to explain the extraordinary rise in rate given the excellent premium/loss ratio.

This is a big driving force for alternative risk financing (particularly captives). Insureds want to avoid the ups and downs of hard and soft markets.

When insureds usually enter the alternative marketplace, they rarely return to the traditional marketplace. We are already seeing this in professional lines and in worker’s compensation.

Captives are an excellent option for a large account, but not for small or middle-market business. These are the accounts that are at the mercy of the insurance carrier. It’s much like the 1% that can happily make record profits and investment gains on the backs of the middle class.

I am sorry, but you are incorrect. Small to mid-size businesses are able to take advantage of captives through sponsored cell captives or taking an 831b election.
Utah and Vermont are big domiciles for small to mid-size businesses who have taken these options.

I was working out this morning, and I saw that he is having a state dinner with the French president. What are these two “men of the people” going to have? Caviar, Dry aged filet mignon and Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Do the 99% have regular meals like this?
For someone who criticizes the rich so much…Obama sure has a lot of rich friends!
Seeing Hollande (who has wrecked his economy and caused wealth creators to flee France) and Obama together makes me long for a 3rd term of Bill Clinton.

I hate to say it, but I am far from a socialist. I am pro-capitalism, but we need a different kind of capitalism in this country. We have the largest income disparity in our country’s history. The rich get richer and the middle class is disappearing. I have no problem with the 1% paying their fair share of taxes. Unfortunately they do not because they have access to tax loopholes and ways of hiding their money. When we can have an even playing field, then let’s talk.

And just what would you expect the President of the United States to eat at a State dinner? Macaroni and cheese?

            Aren’t you from India?

Inequality in earnings has doubled in India over the last two decades, making it the worst performer on this count of all emerging economies. The top 10% of wage earners now make 12 times more than the bottom 10%, up from a ratio of six in the 1990s.

            • The Forbes list of billionaires featured 55 Indians in 2013. Strikingly, when the HDI is adjusted for inequality and every second malnourished child in the world is also an Indian.

            • There are in total 7 states of India which are lagging behind in the race of economic growth namely Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. As per the recently released Human Development Report (HDR) 2013, India ranked 136th 134th the index loses its value by as much as 29.3 per cent.

            • Individual income inequality measured by the Gini index has also consistently risen, at 39.9 per cent in 2011. The Indian growth-inequality paradox is easy to pin down—the wealth that India creates is not evenly redistributed.

I would think you’d have more empathy regarding wealth disparity, but then again you must be part of the upper echelon in your country. You must be a Brahmin.

Sorry for he late reply Libby I have been swamped lately. But I can explain and I think at least to some extent you will agree with me as you mentioned that we need a “different type of Capitalism” and that is very true. I just have a name for the different types.

First we must define what kind we have now and then what kind we need. What we have now is a crony capitalist society. Where the super rich special interests and politically connected get tax breaks, are beneficiaries of industry regulations, loop holes, and are first receivers of new money, all while the lower class is propped up solely on entitlements reducing the lower class to dependency funded by debt to be paid my the middle class (only being taxed) which only serves to weaken the middle class and generate more income inequality .

What we have is not free-market capitalism (which is what we need IMO) and it is very wrong to think the two are similar or use them interchangeably just because the word “capitalism” is in both. We have been in a society that has seen a battle of free-market vs. crony capitalism ever since Hamilton used “The American System” to describe his economic policy of corporate welfare, protectionist tariffs, central banking, and a large public debt. And ever since then cronyism has been winning that battle.

Insurance 102 – how long have you been in this business? A small businessowner paying $5,000 in premium is in no way ready for captive insurance, sponsored cell or not. Neither is a middle-market account paying $50,000 in premium. There isn’t enough money to warrant the risk. The latter may be a candidate for a RRG or a dividend plan, but no way a captive product.

Yes, we are seeing companies with $50-100,000 in total premium become captive members in a PCC (excess of loss or quota share) or agency structure.

102 – most of the PCCs I’ve seen require a minimum of $300k with a $25k retention per claim to participate. Hardly worth the risk for $100k premium account. If you are placing these clients in a PCC, you are doing them a disservice.

BTW – I’ve got 34 years and 5 designations. So what?

It seems that the Insurance industry needs a whole lot more federal regulations! It is almost obscene that they can make these BILLIONS in profits off the backs of Americans. After putting profits into an account to cover future losses, excess money must be returned to policyholders.

This industry is totally out of control. Where are the federal legislators?

      Gerard,

I am posting this under the assumption that you are not being sarcastic.

Did you miss the first sentence of the article? “A relatively quiet year for catastrophes helped the U.S. property/casualty industry achieve an underwriting profit for the first time in four years.” Or the part where it stated that the industry lost $12.5 billion in 2012 and gained $8.5 billion in 2013? That means a net loss of $4 billion over the course of 2 years.

Your plan, “After putting profits into an account to cover future losses, excess money must be returned to policyholders.” That is what insurance companies are doing. That is why the industry does not go under after 4 straight years of underwriting losses. What are proposing that is different?

The industry needs to build reserves for the next next round of stupid price cuts that are inevitable. When carriers start reducing rates to gain market share there will be little fat to cut. Then we start the years of underwriting losses all over again.

On a quota share basis, we’ve seen retentions go as low as $10,000.
By the way, I have eight designations. JK!!

While you say premiums of $50k and retentions as los as $10k, you do not mention limits or stop loss. It sounds like your business is more like Wall Street than Insurance Row. Perhaps you work for AIG. The exact kind of company I would expect to come up with a scheme that seems enticing on the surface, but will bankrupt a company under the right circumstances. You’ve already said you work for a carrier, so the client’s best interest is not on your radar. When you’ve been an agent/broker for 34 years, let’s talk. It’s a whole nother ballgame.

And JK must stand for Just Kidding, because there is no way you have gotten 8 designations in 12 years. My designations are CPCU, CIC, ARM, CRM, and AAI. What are yours?

Kerala and Bengal have had communist governments since the time of independence. The result? Slower economic growth that has strangled businesses in their state.

If you want to look at a state where business is growing, try Gujarat. Government does certain things, but they do them right without lack of corruption.

Read up Libby. You are not very well informed.

It was the shortsightedness of Nehru and his socialist policies that shackled India. If India had embraced a more capitalist philosophy like other British colonies, it would be on par (or ahead of China) in terms of economic growth.

Most producers are clueless. They run from carrier to carrier to try and push prices down. When a carrier raises rate the following year, they run to any other carrier to write the business.

A little advice-instead of being so short-sighted, you might want to look to form a partnership between agent, carrier and insured.

Trust me. I’ve made several trips with agents on large accounts to help them close the sale. I wonder if we have ever met?

I don’t need to run from carrier to carrier, because my business IS a relationship business. I sell service and value. The carrier is just a small part of the transaction. I’ve never needed or wanted an underwriter with me when I meet with clients. They usually end up putting their foot in their mouth and pissing someone off because they don’t know the first thing about sales. You can stay in your cubbyhole and crunch numbers.

Well, personally, I would skip the caviar. Been there, done that, blach. Filet mignon, that’s not all that outside the norm. It’s steak. Good steak, but still, no biggie, $20 to $25 a serving here (at a restaurant – much less if you buy it at the grocery store). The wine, well, I’m partial to Oregon and Australia wines, but I guess Cali wines get better billing. Just sayin’. To fix this meal at the White house, even at inflated prices you’re not going to spend more than $75 per person. So what?

Caviar is not being skipped. Wines are from Washington and California. I like Oregon wines as well-best Pinot Noir in the world.

In Manhattan, you are looking at $40-45 for the filet mignon, $35-40 for the caviar. I omitted the dessert and lobster thermador soup….let’s put that at $20 per person (to be safe).

The last White House dinner the cheapest bottle was around $40 (Iron Horse Russian Cuvee) with the most expensive being a small lot Washington Cabernet at $130 a bottle.

I think the numbers are closer to my numbers than yours KY. I wouldn’t doubt the meal running close to the numbers you have in Kentucky, but Washington D.C. prices are closer to Manhattan prices than Lexington or Louisville prices.

Actually, you are comparing restraurant prices to wholesale or even grocery store prices.

Seriously, you can buy filet for less than $15 per pound at the store. Most servings are 6oz (1/3 lb), though some people will eat the 8 or 9 oz size (1/2+ lbs). So, even if the filet is sold for double what we pay in KY, that makes the meat no more than $17 per 9oz servings of beef. Surely, the vegetables and other accompanying dishes will total less than $15 per person. Okay, we are at $32 per person. Oh, caviar – I have no clue how much that costs (because I don’t like it so I don’t care how much it costs). Hmm, let’s say caviar purchased fresh from whereever is $20 per serving. No problem, we are now at $52 per serving. Since I set the price at $75, that leaves $23 for the wine per person. That’s doable even in DC. And, yes, I know it is. Been there, done that.

Oh, I just googled caviar. That crap is expensive if you get the Beluga ($136 / oz). American caviar, on the other hand, is less than $20 per ounce ($36.25 for 2oz). Since the White House chose California wine, I’m guessing they might go with the American caviar, so my numbers might still be accurate.

            KY JW,
Thanks for your comments man. I know the American caviar is cheaper than what is bought in Europe. Still, we are around $40 per serving as you talked about?
As for the filet mignon (by itself) it is around $45 at a decent restaurant in NYC. You can’t eat the Filet by itself so sides will probably run you another $15-$25 depending on how many sides and what you order.

Desserts probably $10-$12 a person. Wine lists are closely guarded. I am only seeing what was poured at a recent state dinner. The cheapest wine was an Iron Horse Russian Cuvee (around $40) with the main course serving a small lot Washington cabernet at $130 a bottle.

Let’s say a person is by themselves…glass of wine (or two) probably another $15-30 (depending on how many glasses and wine selected.

So $45+$15+$35+$10+$20=$120. This is a conservative number. You forget the cost of labor. San Francisco is the only city that builds in a charge to pay for restaurant workers. In the White House for state dinners, many of the hired workers are unionized employees. I can’t estimate the costs.

Costs on a conservative basis are more than your $75 but less than $200. With more frills that would be a fancy event, I would say the costs are closer to my end.

Been there done that. Well thought out analysis, and you do have some valid points.

Any favorite wines that you like besides Oregon Pinot Noir?

Less wealth disparity in capitalist countries than non-capitalist countries.

I just like the Clinton-Blair-Schroeder version of capitalism versus the Hollande version of capitalism.

Modern day left of center politicians realized that capitalism was the superior economic system. The Chinese even adopted this model in the early 1980’s becoming a much larger Singapore.

Are you suggesting that you want to go and live in Venezuela or Cuba Libby?

I am sure that you would be left alone there. The women in those countries are far better looking than you.

Just got back from your klan meeting racist Libby? Point being that if delmonico’s or another steakhouse were to cater the state dinner it would still be more efficiently priced than the government. The meal would also be better. You forget to factor in a major cost…a majority of the hired help are union workers. You wouldn’t find that with Delmonico’s Libby.

Caviar+Filet Mignon+Salad+Lobster+Dessert+Wine=more than $200 a head. Taxpayers got soaked on this.

Insurance 102 – you are starting with an assumption that the White House kitchen wouldn’t be fully staffed all the time. All meals are provided by the White House kitchen. Also, the President picks a chef to work for him. That chef and their staff will be paid whether or not they have a state dinner to prepare. So, why not have them prepare the meal if they’re going to be paid anyway?

I picked out a few good quotes from an article this morning:

          http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2014/02/11/good-question-why-do-white-house-state-dinners-cost-so-much/

Good Question: Why Do White House State Dinners Cost So Much?
          February 11, 2014 11:22 PM

“On Tuesday night, President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama hosted French President François Hollande for an official state dinner at the White House.”

“Anita McBride, former chief of staff to First Lady Laura Bush and current executive-in-residence at the Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies in the School of Public Affairs at American University.”

“She estimates the cost of food and wine per person was similar to past state dinners.”
“’Food and wine are not where the greatest expense is because that is something we’re used to,’ McBride said.”

*****pay attention – here is the info on the food*****
“On Tuesday night’s menu: caviar from Illinois, potatoes from Idaho and New York, rib eye beef from Colorado, tangerines from Florida, chocolate from Hawaii and wine from Washington and Virginia.”

“The bottles of wine were priced between $30 and $65….”

I think my $75 per person is probably much closer to what they spent than the $200 you said.

Client’s is not a contraction. It is use to denote possession with one person or item. The plural form would be clients’.

I guess the 750 Verbal is coming in pretty handy.

The only reason I know A.R. Rahman is because he has few songs on the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack. I really don’t watch Bollywood movies that often.

Since you asked, I look a lot like Pete Sampras. We are about the same height, same build and have similar complexions. Yes, I do even have a hairline that is starting to recede that matches the tennis great. In fact, I have been mistaken for him twice while walking in NYC. In my humble opinion, the 2nd best male tennis player ever.

My wife isn’t blonde like Mr Sampras. She is Burmese, and we met at the University of Pennsylvania. She is a nurse at a major hospital in NYC. Is there anything else you want to about me gorda?

I never doubted Jindal is more intelligent than me. Did Penn ever consider nominating me for a Rhodes Scholarship? No. Did Brown University nominate Jindal for the Rhodes Scholarship? Yes. In fact, he was selected as a Rhodes Scholar.

If you and every Teabagger want to go and vote for him in 2016, go ahead. Be prepared to be out of power for another four years. Hillary can campaign from her condo in Washington D.C. and still win.

Brown University is a pretty good university Agent. Although, I do not think it shares the prestige of your alma mater. Where did you go to college again Agent? Glenn Beck U? Shit Kicker College? I think it is time you asked for a refund. You lack basic intelligence AND common sense.

I reiterate that the experience that I have coupled with my education and designations make me a much greater asset to the insurance industry than you will ever be. What are you…20-25+ years older than me? That is simply embarassing for you agent.

If you don’t believe me, ask most executive recruiters or major insurance executives. When our names and other information are taken off, I am sure that I will be the preferred choice among almost all of those surveyed.

I just got back to my apartment in Park Slope, and I needed to read Agent and Libby’s e-mail. This is truly funny, and my last e-mail on this article.

Libby (aka Miss Dunkin Donut) can only take down Super Sized Value meals or IHOP breakfasts quickly. What is her bravado? Is she the queen of the plus size UFC circuit now? As for the Marlboro Man that she is supposedly married to, all of the men that played them are dead. Unfortunately, Libby’s husband STILL has to wake up to five tons of fun. I guess that explains his like for copious amounts of 12 and 18 year old Macallan.

As for you agent, you are truly intellectually deficient. I guess we have a tutor in Libby that guide you through phonics, reading comprehension and current affairs.

As for your jokes culturally against me from Libby and to other matters like Agent, they don’t bother me. Living in New York, I’ve been in meetings, boardrooms and discussions with people that are far more direct, aggressive and intelligent than both of you. That is a fact period. If you don’t like my direct words and “mean streak”, go and pound sand. Both of you can dish it out(and Libby can eat all of it!), but you can take what someone will say back to you.

Anyway, I hope both of you don’t get sick too soon. Odds are that there probably be some Indian phyisican to treat you. We know how Agent feels about foreign doctors, and we don’t want any 5’6 120 pound Indian getting any curry breath on Libby’s Twinkies and whatever food she has. Knowing Libby, it is probably a lot!

I am not exactly sure where you get jealousy from my post. However, I am happy that you are successful. I just wished you would spend more time appreciating what you have and less time complaining that you do not have it better.

Do you agree that success is based more in hard work than who is in office? I have improved my standard of living during each of the past 6 Presidents and I can assure you none of them had anything to do with my success.

I guess I am not surprised now that I know you are from NY, one of the most Progressive states in the union. Your claim to be an Independent is a joke. What you have to choose from is either left or further left. What a choice.

Your question – Do you agree that success is based more in hard work than who is in the office? It is a goofy question. You are going to have to do better than that. Speak English please. I am glad you have done well. How do you feel about the President saying last year – If you have had success, you didn’t do that! If you built a building, you didn’t build that. He thinks no one can do anything without the government.

By the way, we aren’t sending NY oil. We have pipelines sending natural gas up there by the billion cubic feet. How is your heating bill up there in the Polar Vortex?

What do you believe is more important to an individual’s success; hard work or who is the President of the United States?

I apologize, I should have benn more clear. We do not need your oil or natural gas. We are sitting on one of the largest sources of natural gas in the country. Ever hear of the Marcellus Shale?

What Texas company is sending natural gas to WNY? My heating bill is on budget, so not too bad. In addition, I am a stockholder of National Fuel Gas so I am hedging on any price increases.

Ron, since you don’t understand me and I seem to not understand you, perhaps we should refrain from corresponding with each other. I didn’t say Texas was sending natural gas to WNY. We are sending it to the East Coast to areas that don’t have resources. Pull up one of your marvelous websites to show the pipelines running to the East Coast from Texas sometime. I have seen the diaghrams before and there are a bunch of them. What does your heating bill run Ron? You said not bad. Is that $500 per month, $800 per month? What is not bad to you?

You never answered my question. What do you believe is more important to an individual’s success; hard work or who is the President of the United States?

You said, “By the way, we aren’t sending NY oil. We have pipelines sending natural gas up there by the billion cubic feet.” Texas is supplying NYC, not WNY. Do you know the difference?

My gas bill is $80 per month year round and that includes a gas stove. And, as you know, I love to cook. In addition I get almost of that back in quarterly dvidends from my stock.

Did you ever google Natural Gas Pipelines in the US? It has a very good map of all the pipelines going from Texas to the N/E and many of them to NY state. Are you saying Texas is not sending gas up there? You are a liar for that statement. There are not many going west from Texas, but a whole bunch going north and east.

Regarding your silly trap question about hard work or who is the President of the US being more important to an individuals success, I will not apologize to you or anyone else for my success. My numbers reveal that I did much better before Obama and expect to do better again after he has gone and all his Progressive minions and we return to a free market society. He is the biggest job killer and anti- business President who has ever been in office. Even your Progressive mind should have realized that by now.
