Tesla is a good example of a small company going up against the established auto industry. Google may be able to follow a similar path despite the market and manufacturing experience of Ford, GM, Chrysler and imports. Arrogance is only arrogance if you don’t succeed!

Google should go the limo approach. Build all the technology in a car model specific segment (Prius?), cut the car in half (ahead of windshield?), insert the technology segment to operate the vehicle, and put it all back together. Stretch Prius. But I won’t ride. Google maps tries to send me the wrong way over curbs and up one-ways to often to put me in a car without brakes or a steering wheel. Horrible way to die. We’ll need ejector seats with parachutes so we can bail when the hard or software fails us. And helmets.

My Google operated phone reboots itself whenever it wants. Sure don’t want my car to do that going down the road. It’s frustrating when you’re using navigation and it does that. Plus, not all roads are google mapped and there are people that live off road. Or what if you’re an off roader. You want to be in charge. I guess those Zip rental cars you rent by the hour could work for this. Just not sure how they would charge themselves if there is no human to plug them in.

The auto industry needs to decide if they want to be like the cable industry and force Google to compete. The cable companies could have just upgraded their speed, but now they may have google entering their market taking their customers. The auto industry will be the same. If they don’t look like they are taking google seriously, google will buy a small auto manufacturer and be a real competitor.
