Do you mean like the single payer VA system? That hasn’t worked out so well for vets in this country or have you been on vacation for the past 2 years?

The vets I know (which are many) are very happy with their VA treatment. It’s the same as any other system. There are good people (good hospitals) and bad people (bad hospitals.) It’s not the system that’s broken. It just needs to be managed better. That’s very do-able.

My sentiments exactly. It’s not the entire VA. It’s some very big problems with horrible outcomes for a minority of VA locations.

KY, 26 hospitals that we know about currently with major problems which is hardly a small problem. Why do you think there is a significant movement to give vets vouchers so they can go to a private hospital for needed treatment/operations? The VA is not underfunded and they are just like the other bureaucracies in the government, terribly inefficient and wasteful.

Agent, I am not disputing that the issue is serious. I am saying that it’s not pervasive. It’s also not happening in the majority of VA clinics and hospitals. In fact, I would say that the 1.5% bad hospital rate for VA is actually better than the rate for private (non government run) hospitals. I am serious. We hear about the VA because that’s government run and makes big noise all over the country. This problem is not just at VA locations. It is in all healthcare and outside the VA, the rate is much more than 1.5%.

There will always be some of those who work in healthcare. You would think the opposite, but no such luck. Plus, there are idiots everywhere. Yes, the law was originally designed to help stop trafficking. The law however, was written to protect “unaccompanied” children. Because children escaping a trafficker or a slave organization would be unaccompanied. The logic is that if the parents are not there, the child must be in some kind of danger.

Yes, the VA scandal has happened. The incident happened in one facility, and those individuals have been removed from employment. The head of the VA resigned over this.
The quality of health care is on average much better than the average American receives in a normal hospital. Read the article Agent, and you can also check out further articles at your local library.

Employees from 19 states have complained about retaliation to the office of special council, for speaking up about problems and you think it was 1 hospital? That’s just the ones that are complaining about being retaliated against, this isn’t even the number of states and multiple facilities in each state that have had problems reported.

I think the final count was 40 hospitals, although according to Agent it was only 26. Either way, out of the multitudes of clinics and hospitals, this issue or dangerous situation if you prefer, is still better than hospitals outside the government umbrella. I seem to think JHACO set the rate at 5%, but it may have been less. I can’t remember exactly. The VA system is no worse than the outside system.

The ACA has actually provided health insurance to over 20 million americans and has gone a long way towards solving the provider side of the problem. Now, had we implemented single payer, we might have been able to address the cost side of the equation as well, since we could use the bargaining power of the federal government to limit costs.

Single payer is a simplistic solution that would be a disaster. Socialize anything and you assure diminishing quality and increased scarcity over time. Look at our federal government and you will find bloated inefficient operations.

We need to reform the system to gain control over the spiraling costs and provide insurance to more people. To do this we need to understand that Health Care and Health Insurance are not one in the same. The former is the service provided by health care professionals and the later is the means to limit ones exposure to catastrophic financial loss from heavy healthcare needs.

Competition in both areas are critical to controlling costs as is access to information on quality, experience, costs and outcomes for a given provider. An informed consumer can decide whether to have an MRI at the hospital or at a free standing imaging center and save up to 50%. To make an informed value decision, the consumer needs to know what the quality is of each, what their experience is and how much each will cost. The same would apply for having minor surgery in the hospital or at a free standing surgical center as it would for having a minor injury checked out in an emergency room or at an urgent care facility. The two impediments to making these value decisions are lack of adequate information and lack of incentive to do so.

The lack of information could be solved by building a database that combined an Angie’s list type of rating and review system along with a database of pricing. The lack of incentive is needs to be addressed by decoupling Health Insurance and Health Care. Observe the behaviors of people who have High Deductible Health Plans and HSA’s. They are better consumers and with better information, they will become even better.

This does not address the costs of Urgent Care or End of Life Care. These are where big dollars are racked up. There are numerous ideas on how to address these costs, but that is a debate for a more in depth forum.

As for access to health care, everyone has it now. The quality of health care they have access to is dependent on how they will be paying for the services. There are numerous ways to increase access to health insurance through incentives, regulations, etc.

Addressing the health care / health insurance issues should be done in a much more thoughtful manner than a rallying cry of “Single Payer”.

I am one of those with a high deductible/HSA account and have to have a procedure done soon. I plan to do just what you said, call and find out how much it costs and how I can keep the costs down. My health insurance carrier also has a database that can compare prices for you on certain procedures (colonoscopy, MRI, etc.) I don’t disagree with your analysis, but where is the incentive for the health providers or insurers to do this? There is none.

Libby, you are correct. Currently, there is no incentive for the providers to do this, in fact, most would rather not. As for the insurers, it can be competitive advantage for them if they attract a higher percentage of cost conscious consumers than their competitors, though I don’t think many have made that leap yet. In order to make it work, you would need to either provide an incentive for the providers to share the info or compel them to do so via regulation. You may also need to incent companies to build the databases and host the websites, though I suspect if the info was readily available, there would be a long line of entrepreneurs competing to become the “Angie’s List’ of health care.

Upon further wandering of the news reports, I found this:

“For now, the law remains unchanged and the subsidized policies are unaffected until the legal case plays out, White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters.

He cited three other cases on the same issue also argued in federal courts, noting two had been dismissed and that Tuesday’s ruling was the first appellate decision against the government’s position.”

So, until this crosses the SCOTUS desk, the subsidy will stay. It will be interesting.

KY, the law was not litigated when it was rammed through Congress without even reading it. Perhaps someone should have read it before it was signed into law and then there would not have been numerous challenges ever since. Bad laws have bad consequences. You should realize that by now.

I feel bad for the unlucky Americans that signed up in a state that does not operate its own exchange. The intent of the Affordable Care Act was indeed to provide these subsidies.

So yes, it seems true that the letter of the law limits the subsidies to State Run Exchanges, but the spirit of the law was to provide them to everyone who signed up. It’s too bad for those unlucky Americans that are stuck in the middle of this political battle.

FFA, I think we know what the intent was in the language. It was to force all states into establishing their own exchange and to expand Medicaid which will come home to roost on State budgets. Gee, I wonder why 36 States didn’t rush out and hire their IT people to jump right onto the exchange building business. The dufus 14 states that did had no clue what they were getting into, hence many of the state exchanges failed no matter how much money they got to establish them. Oregon never even opened or wrote one policy.

This is the result of passing a law with no debate or vetting of its features. As Nancy Pelosi said: We’ll know what’s in it once we pass it” and that is coming to pass. Clearly Congress was totally in the dark about what they were voting on at the 11th hour and as time wears on more and more problems like this will emerge. The law was written by hordes of bureaucrats who loaded it with all their idealistic fantasies and because no one actually vetted what went into it – they were essentially given free reign. It is an example of what happens when Congress abrogates its duties to bureaucrats. Maybe we should get back to rational governance, as our founders intended – where issues as important and pervasive as this are debated to eliminate problematic or impractical features.

**Republican patriots. Proudly marching off to save Americans from the threat of….decent healthcare.**The White House said Tuesday the decision will be appealed to the entire D.C. circuit court — what’s known as an en banc review — where Democrats hold a majority that is nearly certain to overturn the GOP judges’ aggressive move. The next step could be the Supreme Court, which already upheld the Affordable Care Act in a separate case two years ago. / The U.S. courts have never been entirely above the political system, but under Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, whose court routinely strikes down longstanding precedent along 5-4, strictly party-line votes, they are becoming little more than another legislative branch — one that holds itself above the branch that was vested with lawmaking powers by the Constitution. / The majority opinion was not without a comedic interlude. “We reach this conclusion, frankly, with reluctance,” Judge Thomas Griffith said of the opportunity to achieve a longtime GOP goal.

What there are limits to how far one can pretend a statute says black when it says white?

I would have thought there were no limits left when Obama was able to personally, legislatively change express language in Obamacare that stated a certain date no fewer than 3 times.

    Who knew?

Anyway, I’m sure that the Supreme Court, if not earlier, will fix this by defining “state” as including the federal government.

**BREAKING: Two Hours After A Court Strikes Down Obamacare Subsidies, Another Appeals Court Upholds Them**…as the Supreme Court has made clear — and as the Fourth Circuit reiterates in its opinion — a federal law should not be interpreted by reading a single line out of context. Rather, “a reviewing court should not confine itself to examining a particular statutory provision in isolation” as the “meaning—or ambiguity—of certain words or phrases may only become evident when placed in context.” / Under the longstanding Chevron Doctrine, however, it is not the job of judges who are confronted with an ambiguous statute to read their preferred outcome into the law. Rather, the Supreme Court has ordered federal judges to defer to an agency’s reading of a law — in this case, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) — so long as “the agency’s answer is based on a permissible construction of the statute.” “We ‘will not usurp an agency’s interpretive authority by supplanting its construction with our own,” Gregory writes, “so long as the interpretation is not ‘arbitrary, capricious, or manifestly contrary to the statute.’” / As Gregory’s opinion lays out, the Obama Administration’s reading of the law is entirely consistent with the law’s structure and purpose. “Denying tax credits to individuals shopping on federal Exchanges would throw a debilitating wrench into the Act’s internal economic machinery,” the court explains. “It is therefore clear that widely available tax credits are essential to fulfilling the Act’s primary goals and that Congress was aware of their importance when drafting the bill.”

That is what the country gets for electing ideological leaders who thought they could force feed their Utopian Socialist dream and the people would just accept it after they found out what was in it. Guess what, this law has never been popular and is less so today than when it was passed. Too many people are getting hurt. How many lost their coverage and desperately had to get this at higher premiums for higher deductibles? Did people in their 50’s need Abortion coverage, the pill? Did young people really need their premiums to double or triple to support older people?

This ACA was nothing but the “Heist of the Century” imposed on hard-working middle class people who now have to pay for more than just health care but for other items long considered optional and a personal responsibility.

My auto insurance does not pay for tire rotation or oil changes. Those are routine maintenance items we pay for. The coverage pays only for certain catastrophes substantially beyond the deductible.

Instead ACA has devolved into paying not only for catastrophic illnesses, but nonsense like daily birth control pills and viagra. Give me a break. This bill is an insult to those on the paying side of the equation.

After 5 1/2 years of cronyism and mismanagement while he parties with the likes of Jay-Z and Beyoncé, scandals that occur too often to even keep up with, and an absolutely failed foreign and domestic policy. The fact you think the only reason people voted against Obama is because he’s a “black president” despite almost every prediction by conservatives of his ensuing failure coming to fruition, speaks volumes of how asinine and debased your politics really are. But then again, you’re the prototypical Democrat voter.

Single payer doesn’t work. Regardless of what anecdotes you hear from both sides of the issue in Europe, universal health care ends up being health care rationing. You simply can’t get care on demand anywhere universal health care is being practiced.
Instead, let the market work. Why not spend the money to double or even triple the number of doctors, nurses and other health care professionals we have in the US. Whether it be by opening or expanding universities and other learning institutions, then increase the numbers of hospitals to facilitate the increase in the numbers of these professionals.
I’m no expert, but when you increase the supply of anything, even a service like doctors, then the price will go down and more people will be able to afford it, insurance or not.

Right Libby, I’m thinking the same thing. Med schools are at capacity, and there are only so many; that’s by design (AMA) to keep physician fees high. So even if we come up with the money to build more med schools, how many people will go through 4 years of undergrad, 4 years of med school plus another 2 – 3 for residency (more if they’re specializing), if they can’t expect to get fairly wealthy from it? Pushing fees down will discourage people from entering the profession.

At the end of the day VA scandal or not, subsidy or not, single payer or not, This is bad legislation. Has been since some 7th grader put it together. Why:

1.) It was sold on lies and a lot of them- If you like your doctor you can keep your doctor, This will be budget neutral- Going to cost at least a couple trillion dollars? Maybe more. The website will cost about 90 million- Ha, what are we up to now several hundred million? It still dos not work. If you like your plan you can keep your plan. This plan will save everyone money- at least 2,500 for the average family. On and on, Lies, lies lies

2.) Prices for next year (2015) according to a recent Washington Post article will go up 20 to 25%. It will get to a point where the people this was supposed to help can’t afford it and those who get it free will have to pay something and opt out.
3.)Subsidies only work for a while. At some point it won’t matter unless the subsidy goes up and the country can’t afford it. Not with almost 20 trillion in debt.
4.) One article I recently read said that the Dems are not talking about enrollees because it is estimated that there are the same number of uninsured as there was when this was rolled out. In other words this screwed up healthcare for everyone and although some got healthcare, others lost it so the numbers are benefit neutral.

It was bad legislation that is pushing the country toward bankruptcy, forcing hospitals to close or merge and will result in poorer healthcare for all. Sad, very sad

Hi Libby-yes, I do think that republicans would get behind this. If you think that it costs about $250k to educate a nurse and $500k for a doc, thats a lot of money. But we would be educating trained professionals in a growth industry who will in turn employ other trained professionals in their offices and practices and at the same time lower the cost of health care.
So lets just say that the nut is $5BB or even $10BB a year to do this-thats nothing compared to the billions we waste on healthcare now for things like medicare, medicaid, ACA at the Federal level-and being bi partisan, that waste occurs regardless of who is running Congress or the Presidency, so to me this is one initiative that would cross both aisles. And what politician could resist the lure of opening a new medical school or hospital in their home district?
BTW, I’m a vet too. I didn’t have too many instances of needing to access care when I was in the military and none after I left, but my experience was that it was uneven. It could be great, but the sheer burearocracy, ineptness and delays in getting care was at times infuriating and frustrating. There weren’t any controls or incentives to operate efficiently,so the system was just not 100% reliable. I can’t imagine that the Federal Gov’t could handle 300MM people better then they do now for active and retired military and dependants

Every one will need health care at some point in their life and making it accessible and affordable is what we should be doing as a nation. The pull yourself up by your bootstraps and take care of yourself mentality works in many facets of life, but one shouldn’t be healthcare. In my humble opinion.

Fortunately for you, you ended up working in an industry that routinely offers benefits to their workers. Not all industries do. My ex-husband worked 50 hours a week and had no health insurance. Luckily I could add him to my coverage, but if I also worked in an industry that didn’t provide benefits we would have been hard pressed to be able to afford it on our own.

Not everyone that needs a hand-up is a lazy moocher.

Agent said- ” How do you see the VA scandal, phony or real?”

I think there is enough blame to pass around. This was a known issue when Obama was campaigning. He even knew of the escalating wait times from a Bush briefing and letter sent to him when he took office in 2008. So Bush knew there was a problem and told Obama about it. That does not get Bush off the hook (It may or may not, depending on when they found out) but the fact that Obama is now “mad as He** is a joke. Fact is:

    * The wait lists, timely care etc has gotten far worse since he took office and it does not appear they did anything.
    * You can’t tell me this is “new News” to the Secretary, and
    * He should at leaset say something and tell, at least the veterans, what he is going to do about it and immediately do it.

In my opinion, this is a government bureaucracy and while they had good intentions it is like every other government run program, Inefficient, cash draining and politically driven when decisions are made. The only VA facility that I am aware of that I know does a great job is Walter Reed Medical Center.
I would much rather they do away with VA hospitals and allow veterans to use their VA card to have access to any hospital they want to go to and get the care they need with the same VA benefits available now. It would be more convenient to a high percentage of veterans, probably better care, no wait times and more cost effective. Probably save a lot of money.

If a veteran needs to access a VA facility around here They have to drive to downtown Detroit (OK facility) or drive to Ann Arbor which is an hour and a half from my house. Ann Arbor is a much better facility, care is better and timely.

GOOD GRIEF…still the same political BS from Agent (can’t you change your playbook…you could just cut and paste your invectives from 6 months ago and spare your fingers then effort of retyping) and his ilk.

Let’s look at some realities that may be telling as to what and who we are speaking of when we talk affordable and accessible healthcare:

USA Today did a large article on the comparisons in “health” of the citizenry between MS and MN. The upshot was that due to affordable and accessible healthcare, you are a lot healthier and live longer in MN than MS. Regardless of how or why, MN has more accessible and affordable healthcare available to its citizens and this makes profound differences in the life of these citizens.

I therefore have absolutely NO understanding of why the “red” states refused to approve exchanges IF providing affordable and accessible healthcare was the goal as it should have been.

If I lived in TX or MS or any other of the states that refused to set an exchange I would truly wonder why my state is withholding the opportunity for a chance at affordable and accessible healthcare from me…as opposed to MN or NY or IL or any of the states that approved exchanges. Because they did not want to expand Medicaid? Because of “costs?”

In this country because some of us still think that access to healthcare is a priviledge and not aright, we have to conclude that to gain access, you need to be able to pay for it. That translates, in this country, into being able to buy health insurance since we still do not agree that universal healthcare is a “right” for all our citizens.

Why don’t you all look up those articles in USA Today and see how grateful those who either could now get insurance or who were placed on Medicaid were to finally be able to afford…and actually get…care. There are many other sources, so Agent and your ilk, DON’T think that there are not many who have benefitted. Had the reactionary
red” states approved the exchanges, it would be even better for ALL…but they put political gamesmanship (or is it bigotry? racism? class warfare?) above the welfare of those people.

IN fact, if I lived in TX and could not afford health insurance and therefore, good access,..and my state did not approve the exchange preventing me from Medicaid or a subsidy, I would sue as causing unequal protection under the law…why should a Minnesotan be able to get affordable health insurance/care and not a Texan…especially when there are statistics showing how much healthier folks are when they do have access? You red states are robbing years off people’s lives.

You all can place your political arguments and vilif Obama and the Dems all you want, but at the basic depth of the issue is that ALL the people have benefit of good and affordable healthcare. With people like Agent and others who don’t even agree that this access and affordability is a RIGHT of ALL in this the richest country in the world, we Libs need to take our opportunities as we find them…so yeah, this was a one party law. Bitch all you want. Had the Repubs not decided to wage war on a Democratic president the moment he was elected and make him “a one term president” from the git go, we might have had good communication and good compromise…but that went down the drain after election night and the comment by that jackass McConnell.

ACA is not perfect but I sure as hell give the administration props for pursuing it in the face of every challenge you meanspirited, bigoted, racist, sexist…(pick your proper category),..people have thrown up.

The only argument that bears any credence against the ACA is the cost argument. However, look at how hospitals and healthcare providers bill. Look at bit pharma, that, while moving overseas to avoid US corporate taxes, still will not let the gov negotiate down drug prices. THEN, look at the proliferation of vertical monopolies that large health institutions are putting in place…sometimes to the point of monopolies and certainly cutting down competition, if we think cost competition is valid in the healthcare industry. YES, and we need tort reform but sometimes its a little hard when you have articles on a Johns Hopkins doctor that took pictures of women’s privates for 25 YEARS for his viewing pleasure (yes, I KNOW that isn’t malpractice, so don’t bother “educating” me on that point). Or when a three day hospital stay results in bills from SIX separate “specialties”, none of whom takes ultimate responsibility for the whole patient?

Libby, good luck on pricing services…I tried with cat scans, MRI’s, etc., and could never get a straight answer from the providers. Our non transparent system hurts ALL of us and drives up costs.

There is so much we could do to improve care and costs for ALL of us, but when we are still faced with those who don’t even believe that affordable and accessible healthcare is a right that enables us to pursue “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” I guess we will just hear the same specious arguments over and over and over.

well Cas, if it was actually affordable – by old school Webster definition (less expensive) and we were not expecting a 20% price increase as well as loss of subsidy, you may have a point. But, its not affordable. It expensive as all get out. If the subsidy thing is upheld, we will have a dramatic increase in taxes. It will also continue to repress the job market and states like mine (for now anyways) will have no jobs left.

Hi FFA, I am the real agent, not the booger bad copy stealing my moniker to post his trash.

I heard on the news this morning that the wonderful fresh faced Josh Earnest, the new mouthpiece for Obama has invited Clinton’s spinmeisters in for a meeting for advice on how better to communicate their message to the people. When policies and the message is so bad, there are few ways to spin it. The difference is that Slick Willy realized his policy was bad and made some changes like changing welfare policy. Of course, Newt had to shut the government down for a while to reach a balanced budget, but Willy blinked first. This White House keeps doing the same thing over and over hoping for a different result. The result is a stagnant economy, fires raging all over the world and a disengaged President who would rather go to fundraisers than roll his sleeves up and solve problems.

**Republicans Heading For Disaster as 57% Support ACA or More Liberal Health Care Reform.** What is interesting about the CNN poll is that the opposition to Obamacare isn’t all about opposing health care reform. In the poll, 59% oppose Obamacare, but 17% of the opposition is because the law is not liberal enough. The margin of opposition isn’t 40%-59%, but 40%-42%. People age 18-34 (42%) and over age 65 (44%) registered the highest levels of support for the ACA. The 18-34 age bracket also was the group most likely to believe that the law isn’t liberal enough (22%). Fifty-seven percent of those age 18-34 think that the law has helped themselves or other people. The characteristics of those who are most likely to claim that the ACA isn’t helping anyone are white (53%) male (45%) rural (53%) conservatives (64%) age 35-49 (50%). / The majority of Americans still claim that they oppose the ACA, but the reason for their opposition is not as cut and dry as Republicans would like to believe. when the percentage that wants more a more liberal health care reform is combined with the ACA supporters, fifty-seven percent of those polled support healthcare reform.

Since none of you will “man” up and admit this, perhaps I will have to post under your moniker and say something Conservative. That should go over very well with you, right?

I would like to take everything back I have said about Ronald Reagan. He is the greatest President in the past 100 years and rescued the country from the mess Carter made and restored the economy. Reaganomics really did work.

Rather than a long and drawn-out legal battle that might end up in the Supreme Court, the administration would do better to simply declare state exchanges to be part of the federal exchange system, and thereby undo the two judges’ tortured reading. The administration has the regulatory authority to do this; it’s already created state-federal “partnership” exchanges that don’t appear in the actual law. If John Boehner disagrees, let him sue.

Speaking of on our dime, your President is right at 400 fundraising trips on our dime. By the time he leaves office, he will have the equivalent of one whole year on the golf course, all on our dime. How about all those Hawaiian and Martha’s Vineyard vacations, all on our dime. You have your nerve criticizing Boehner when your President abuses his power every day of the week, does nothing to address problems, drinks beer and shoots pool.

Just to add some context, conservative dissemblers fail to note that Obama has taken far fewer days off than his predecessor, George W. Bush. Obama’s average of 21.5 vacation days per year makes him look like a workaholic compared to Bush’s 110 day average per year – more than five times Obama’s. But if you’re a rich white Republican you can’t be accused of being lazy or shiftless when you are enjoying some leisure time at your ranch in Crawford or on your yacht in Kennebunkport.

Ah, Libby, the minister of disinformation. Please explain how GW chopping wood and bike trail riding in Crawford is more expensive than taking AF1 and all support planes and a huge contingent to Hawaii for 15 days at a time. How about going to Camp David for the weekend compared to yet another Martha’s Vineyard for 15 days for another $4-5 million. I would like to compare the cost of Obama for 6 years to Bush for eight years.

You forgot the other 250 days a year he sat in the White House while Cheney ran the place, costing The United States trillions in terms of lives and unfunded wars. All the while, his buddies were making fortunes depleting the middle class.

Just because the President’s home happens to be in Hawaii instead of Crawford TX makes no difference. Except for the fuel, it’s the same amount of money to go either place.

Vacations of recent presidents at this point in their presidencies: Reagan – 29 trips, 180 days; Clinton – 11 trips, 84 days; Bush II – 50 trips, 326 days; Obama – 14 trips, 95 days.
