    When I lived in Maine, they called Massachusetts drivers “Massholes.” LOL!

    @Libby – they still do

    I wonder how accurate this study really is, though. It was just based off Allstate’s numbers, meaning they didn’t capture all the potential drivers in their analysis – only those Allstate decided to insure in whichever particular areas they decided to write.

      Well, 2 years ago Allstate said Philly drivers were the worst. Who knows? But they do seem to pick on the Northeast. LOL!

      This study was conducted using Allstate’s own data. Allstate has been writing Automobile coverage in Massachussetts since 2010. I cannot find their 2013 Marketshare, but they’ve never been in the Top 10 in MA. This study is not statistically valid. Further, they’re probably counting windshield claims as ‘collisions’. Glass is automatically covered on the MA Auto policy and by law you cannot operate a vehicle in MA with a chipped or cracked windshield. Glass claims usually account for 30% of all collision incidents.

    I spent a a lot of time in that area and this study does not surprise me in the least,
    Figuring that they paved over the old cow paths of the 1600’s for their roadways, and that traffic signs are considered a recommendation and signals lights are to be obeyed only if law enforcement are watching.
    But the #1 reason why they are the worst drivers are that for the most part they are grumpy angry people who use their cars as an extension of their anger.
    I saw two cars on Route 1a playing bumper cars at 60 mph, they were forced to stop at a light and the drivers promptly got out of their cars and proceeded to beat the snot out of each other, everyone watched and no one dared to interfere. Just like the bell at a prize fight, the light turned green, every beeped the horns, the two dudes stopped fighting, got in their cars and drove off.
    I won’t mention snow truck drivers…..

      I have lived in all parts of the country and the level of aggressiveness depends upon the poor design of the roads and the density of the population. Boston roads were not paved over cow paths – that’s a old wives tale – it’s worse – the roads were actually designed that way. But to refer to all people in an area as angry and grumpy – well that may be only when they encountered you.

    This study is flawed. There is no way there are worse drivers than in South Florida. No way.

    The part of the country that has the worst drivers, according to a specific individual, is the area in which that person lives.

      Reminds me of one of George Carlin’s old bits,which went something like: “Have you ever noticed that anyone driving slower than you is an idiot and anyone driving faster than you is a maniac?…Can you believe this idiot in front of me?.. Whoa! Look at that maniac go!”

    many motorists have lost all caution when passing; pass on hills, double yellow lines etc — obvious head-ons if another vehicle comes from the other way

    drive 5 miles per hour slower and you will get there almost the same time and will cut fuel consumption and frayed nerves
