Here’s my two cents. I’ve been obese for 35+ years. For me personally the weight started coming on when the school system started cutting gym class from 5 to 3 days a week and then cutting it just to two terms in the 4 years I was in high school. If we put PE back in school, our kids will hopefully won’t have to repeat our mistakes. As for as us adults, my suggestion is to make a gym membership benefit of our health insurance or make the gym dues tax deductible. Okay I’m off my soap box for today.

Sorry you’ve been obese for so long and I hope you can get it under control. People that are motivated to use gym memberships will use them and those that aren’t will not. Even if it’s free. I think the problem is rooted in the availability of a large array of fast food outlets, mega grocery stores with entire isles dedicated to snacks, and more sugar in foods. I know so many people that don’t eat at home anymore.

Just curious, but where have they cut PE out of schools? I’ve never heard of that.

Obese, my company offers a beautiful gym with multiple classes, resources, equipment, and facilities. It is 80 feet from my desk. The farthest person from it is 1000 feet away through a beautiful corridor. We pay them to use it. Of the 800 plus who work in this building, 100 use it. Can’t be cheaper, more convenient, or better. I use it about 363 days a year. I am appalled at those who don’t. Keep fighting the fight and find inspiration where you can. You are stronger than you think.

Crain, I want to work where you work. Very jealous of you, right now.

I have struggled with this since being a little girl and was always teased about by my family. I see pictures now and I was not obese by any means. But their taunting made it a self-fulfilling prophesy for me. That’s how I always saw myself and that’s what I am now. There is also the issue of genetics. They play a huge role. Fat seems to be the last of the politically correct discriminations and it’s wrong. Leave us fatties alone!

I’ve found if you keep your shopping to the outer aisles of the grocery store, you will fair much better. That’s where you’ll find lean meat, fruits and vegetables, and some dairy. No sugary cereals, chips or soda to be found there!

And by all means stay out the Pigglah Wigglah. Just a bad connotation all the way around.

Good advice, but don’t forget to exercise! Even if you just walk 20 minutes per day, it makes a difference. My Mom is 75 and she does it.

It’s interesting that the lowest rate of obesity is in Colorado. And what type of states typically tend to have high rates of obesity? It seems to also be the states that are dead-set on cutting education. It’s also perhaps appropriate in most cases that they used red as the color for these.

That is interesting but instead of being fatties, they just smoke them in CO.

The increase in the nations obesity has started to level-off but still every state has an obesity rate that exceeds 20%. Rates may have tampered off but the U.S. is still very much overweight. In the article, it says that states have reported a decrease in obesity in children through physical activity and healthier choices. So it is possible to lower the obesity rates the only problem is, is that america needs to accpe the epidemic and start taking action.

Obesity has become a major problem in the United States. With all 50 states being more than 20% overweight, America has a serious problem. The numbers have stopped rising but there has been no dramatic change in the obese population. According to the article, some numbers have decreased in childhood obesity in certain states. They believe that with physical activity and the right food choices this epidemic can be turned around but its time America made the changes and took the matter seriously. Changes in policies and environment, obesity can be tackled.

When I was a kid, we left the house in the morning on our bike, trucked through the woods, explored, came home for lunch, and were back out again until dark. Today, you can’t let your kids do that. They have to be enrolled in sports, which they need access to and it’s more work for the parents. Parents need to turn off the TV, shut down the game boys, and get out and play with their kids. It would do them both a world of good.

Agree. I rode my bike to school until 10th grade. Our daughter never had that opportunity.
