Personally I do not go to movies anymore, and yes, I did make this choice after the shooting at the Batman movie in Colorado. If movie theater owners are not interested in keeping us safe, then I am confident in my choice. While I was not planning to see “the Interview.” I did watch it online as it was (to my knowledge) the first movie released the same day online as in theaters. I certainly do feel bad for movie theaters and their staff, but if they are not interested in taking steps to keep us safe (yes, I do want metal detectors there and better security doors as well), then I am not interested in going there.
I’m by no means a statistics expert, but I’d wager a guess that you are exponentially more likely to be injured or killed driving to the theater than you are from a movie theater shooting. You’re more likely to be struck by lightning too. And I’d imagine you are also a lot more likely to be injured or killed by a foodborne illness like listeria.
Does that mean you’ve stopped driving, never go outside and don’t eat?
Excite, I don’t think anyone is advocating not driving or going outside or eating. However, if I were going to an event in a gun free zone like many do, I would sure be aware of my surroundings and the individuals attending. Call it profiling if you like, I don’t care.
ExciteBiker was just making the point that if personal safety is your reason to not go to the theater, you are being irrational. You are statistically safer in the theater than many other activities in which people regularly engage.
Good job not staying up with the news Ron. Another incident at a movie theater with a perp trying to kill people and committing suicide by cop. Who missed the point? That’s right. The Progressive Socialist from Buffalo.

Ever notice where most if not all of these shootings occur? “Gun free” zones. Yep, the perps know they will face little or no resistance and they seek out such places. Suppose you’re a criminal about to break into someone’s home. Which would you most likely enter? The one with an NRA sticker and “Beware of Owner” sticker (showing a gun in an owner’s hand pointed right at you) or a home with an anti-gun poster in the window? Think about that.
Dave, it looks like the anti-gun crowd is down thumbing you for your comments. As I recall, you are from Chicago, the unchallenged leader in gun murders and have some of the strictest laws. All I see happening from this terrible incident is online streaming and Netflix doing a booming business. I can get a whole month of Netflix movies sent to me for what one movie on premises costs.
The anger in America began in earnest after 9/11. The politics of blame has been almost out of control ever since. We have a President, since 2009 has instead of being a uniter, has been a divider on many fronts including race, gender and economic status. Just look at all the divisive things he has done in nearly 7 years. Is it any wonder why he has drawn opposition?
It is funny that you call Obama a divider when the leaders of the Republican party swore to oppose everything he did before he even took the oath of office. They pressured Republican members of Congress to vote against anything Obama supported before he even took office, even if it was something they would otherwise support. You want dividers…look no farther than the Republican party, Agent. This political sytem is completely broken as it stands.
Hey Man, perhaps if Obama hadn’t stood for Progressive Socialism ideas, he may have had more cooperation. It has been his way or the highway since the first day he took office with no room for negotiation. Disastrous policies will always draw opposition no matter who the President is.
Just saying… Two wrongs don’t make a right. Republicans made the decision BEFORE Obama took the oath and perhaps before he was even elected (I don’t remember which). If they can’t start off attempting to work with him (which they did not) they have no leg to stand on when complaining about his lack of cooperation.
This isn’t a defense of Obama, merely a gripe with both political parties. They are ripping the country apart with their petty bickering and partisanship.

All these shootings happen in gun-free zones. Clearly, the criminals laugh at such measures.
States with highest firearm death rates per 100,000:
Louisiana, Mississippi, Alaska, Wyoming, Montana, Oklahoma, Alabama, Arkansas, South Carolina, West Virginia, Arizona, Tennessee, New Mexico, Missouri, Kentucky…..
Those are the top 15. I’d say most of those are states with relatively lax guns laws and high gun ownership.
The 15 states with the lowest rates: Rhode Island, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, California, Deleware, South Dakota, Illinois and Nebraska. I’d say most of those have decent gun laws in place (although clearly some that likely don’t).
Maybe so…maybe no. I haven’t seen an analysis on that. If you have, please provide a source for me to take a look at. I don’t necessarily disagree with you Mr. Mister. If accurate, wouldn’t that be a reason to fight to reduce or eliminate poverty? We could reduce poverty and violence in one fell swoop. Instead, we have the middle class shrinking and more people struggling. More money concentrating at the top and less in the middle and bottom.
Here is an article from the Atlantic (not exactly known for having conservative views) which shows that poverty is more highly correlated to gun violence than stricter gun laws, although there is also a correlation there as well. theatlantic.com/national/archive/2011/01/the-geography-of-gun-deaths/69354/

Man–you need to get your facts straight. CT (where I live) is one of THE strictest states when it comes to gun laws (thanks to 12/14/12)… And, guess what!? Hartford had it 19th (NINETEENTH!!)gun related murder this past weekend. That, to me, means that the bad guys are not giving up their guns and don’t give a shit about any of the laws that are on any of the books.
Make that TWENTY GUN RELATED MURDERS IN HARTFORD!!! There was another murder this past weekend. Those strict gun laws are really working, aren’t they!?
Trust me, Hartford is way behind Baltimore on gun murder. For the month of July, they had 43 in a city of less than 700,000 residents and even topped Chicago. It is pretty close to anarchy there and the dufus mayor asked the Feds to help them now since Police will not do anything for fear of being charged with murder by their equally idiotic DA.
I find it hilarious that someone dislikes my comment. All it does is state some data from the CDC… Well, and some supposition on gun laws… I suppose you don’t like facts? I even left it up to you to interpret them as you like.
There are a few posters here who can manipulate the votes (for example: being able to vote on a post 50 times in one session) as well as people who hide behind the voting structure and don’t chime in on WHY there is a disagreement which would potentially begin a useful conversation.
My advice (not that you asked for it :) — don’t pay attention to the like/dislike tally as it’s totally pointless.
There is facts news and then there is Fox News. Guess which viewership out here spends way too much time hiding facts, spitting out platitudes, and never citing sources.
Hey Trust Me, did you see that Fox set an all time record for viewership for the first debate? No one was watching the main stream networks except for a few on this blog.
This article was on 7-27. Here it is – only a few days later 8-5 and we have another movie theatre attack with a gun and also a knife in Nashville. If movie houses don’t do something to help make sure we do in fact have a good experience at the movies, they better start installing some security measures – otherwise everyone will stay home and rent movies on TV.
I think that is a trade-off best made by theater owners. Free market weighing of costs and benefits of extra security. If they are too lax or too strict, as you said there are other options for entertainment.

to me, the new “movie release date” is the day it comes to online streaming. I no longer pay attention to the Theater release dates.

Seven murders this past weekend. The one thing I’m sure the all the perps had in common was no father at home. But that topic is off limits.

It will not be long until America goes back to the days of the West when fast drawn wins! Such anger such growing rage!

I think you’ll find a higher correlation between violence and poverty than violence and gun laws.

Waaa waaa waaa. Quite whining about Fox News. You can’t handle the truth, that’s why you prefer to pretend it isn’t there.

Let them stay lax and see how long they stay in business when the crowds stop coming.
