I am not looking forward to autonomous vehicles… I don’t like the idea of relying on software to drive the vehicle. I also think it foolish to rely on anti-hacking software in vehicles to protect them from being hijacked. I can envision terrorist hackers waiting anxiously for us to supply them with virtually thousands, if not millions of potential missiles to commandeer for their nefarious purposes. I know those who think these are a good idea have been sold on safety etc. but it is short sighted and naïve. So let’s make the Google’s etc. of the world richer and the hacker terrorists happier.. why not???
I dive pretty often in a tight congested urban area. And there is never a time where I don’t run into a bad or just asinine driver. Every time I go out I see at least one and in most cases several. What makes you so certain that self driving cars will be worse than human drivers. Looks at the cars we drive. How many of them are built by machine and how many are built by hand and which are better built? I usually enjoy driving and most likely will have a human driving car for quote some time. But there are times, many times I wish I could sit back and let the car deal with all the aggravation of driving.
Dave, when we have 40-50 million recalls a year with cars, how can we expect that it won’t continue in the future? Self driving cars will be about as important as Wind powered turbines for our electricity (about 3%) for the forseeable future.
agent – what is worse, drivers who text or autonomous vehicles? just think – no drivers means no texting while driving! isn’t that a benefit you can get behind?
Keep in mind that many of the recalls are not of critical mission issues. And also, when recalled, the issue is normally fixed. What about recalling bad drivers? How many times have you read stories about drunk drivers who killed somebody with 3, 4, 5 previous drunk driving convictions. Not allegations, but convictions. I’m as adverse to change as almost anybody, but humans have proven beyond any doubt to be inherently bad drivers. Why would we think automated cars would be worse?
Has there EVER been an instance where terrorists took over an airplane that was being operated by software and not a human?

“In a recent survey of airline pilots, those operating Boeing 777s reported that they spent just seven minutes manually piloting their planes in a typical flight. Pilots operating Airbus planes spent half that time.”
“The Pentagon has deployed automated piloting software in F-16 fighter jets. The Auto Collision Ground Avoidance System reportedly saved a plane and pilot in November during a combat mission against Islamic State forces.”
Why couldn’t we use the same kind of technology currently used in airplanes in our future autonomous vehicles? That should not be the ONLY deterrent in place, but it seems to be working just fine with planes right now.
There is still a lot of things to be ironed out before these cars can be released. What about split second decisions? A deer darts out in front of your car on a two lane road. My money is on my brain processing that quicker than a computer. How about pulling up to a gas station, and when? Think about all the odd situations that can arise while driving that will need to be handled.

i think round 1 of driverless cars should have humans behind the wheel to take over when the need arises while we work out those kinks. that said…
jack – if it’s foggy or raining and you can’t see more than 5 feet in front of you, but the car’s autonomous driving technology uses thermal cameras and LIDAR to see 20 feet in front of the car, wouldn’t the car be quicker to detect issues on the road ahead in that situation?
Practical experience has proven just the opposite. Computers now think faster than humans. I’ve seen the ads where computers make thousands of calculations per second. They can sense better than humans can the condition of the road they are driving on. They are not distracted by cell phones, etc. Funny how around 45,000 people are killed on our nation’s highways every year and some of us we believe machines will do worse.
Jack, I think I will let these other trusting souls get the driverless vehicles and put their faith on sensors which may work or may fail. The Automobile Industry does not have a good track record on safety, manufacturing quality, they lie about their emissions (VW)or their mileage (Mitsubishi).

yeah, they suck at safety. those pesky 3 point seatbelts, air bags, crumple zones, ABS, ESC, accident avoidance features, backup cameras, safety glass that won’t decapitate someone whose head hits the windshield…but (not)seriously, what IS the auto industry doing to improve safety on the roads anyway?

Autonomous vehicles are coming, but traffic congestion will continue. One solution is to use dedicated elevated lanes with smart connected vehicles operating in congested urban corridors.
