“only 19 percent of Google’s technology jobs are held by women.”

And what exactly is the problem about this? This is ridiculous. Women, by nature, are less into these kind of jobs than men. Google gets way less applications from women than men in this kind of sector.

Stop involving into Google’s business, they are doing fine.

They have jobs that are not programming jobs and have a bad ratio there as well. Facebook had about a 50/50 ratio in non-tech jobs for example. Saying to leave alone a company because they are doing fine is stupid.

You can’t just compare ratios like that. It’s oversimplification. How many applicants do they get for how many jobs? How many men apply, how many women? Do they have equal qualifications/experience? All things being equal, the ratio should be 50/50 and if not, it should be investigated. But how can we say all things are equal? All this article talks about is the ratio. Tell me how you know that this ratio is deliberate by Google, or someone at Google, that’s discrimination and I’ll support you, and call for the full penalty of law right next to you. Until then you’re just asking for women & minorities to be hired or paid more, just because they are women/minorities, and that’s not equality it’s affirmative action.

Let’s focus on equal pay for equal work. While the proportion of women to men in these jobs is lower, it does not excuse paying women less for performing the same job.

Again you are over-generalizing and vilifying people/corporations, for what could be innocent, or could be terrible, you don’t know until you know the details. When an employer hires you, they want to pay you the lowest salary they can get away with (men and women). Do men demand higher pay, while women are willing to accept less? If so, not the company’s fault. Are men more willing to demand raises? Are women less likely to look elsewhere if they don’t get the raises they want? I don’t know the answers to these questions, and neither do you. Until we do, we just assume it’s all evil corporations and their hatred of women. There ARE some people/corporations that marginalize women. Go after them, they deserve it, but don’t lump them all together for the bad actions of some. That’s profiling, and we don’t like that.

Carol, why did Elizabeth Warren and Hilliary pay women less than their male counterparts?

Actually it’s already illegal to pay less for the same job, but there are other factors, such as performance and experience that comes into play. Also as mentioned, many woman opt for lower paying jobs to have more flexibility, I know this because that is what I offer as an employer. However since it’s already illegal, it’s case by case and need to be taken to court if one feels they are being cheated. End of discussion!

Mr Opinion is correct. More analysis is needed. Is the whole nation’s workforce exactly 50% male and 50% female? If yes, then one could argue that the analysis could be correct. Also, comparable and similar jobs do not mean exactly the same job.

There are industries where females dominate the workforce too, but I am guessing the government won’t be investigating them for a long while.

I agree there is a lot of missing information with this article, that being said there is still a problem with women not being paid as men are paid. All things being equal, experience, time in the job, position, etc. the woman will be paid less. I’ve experienced it over the years as millions of others. There are a lot of women out there that is the bread winner.
