Texas Gov. Rick Perry has toured areas along the Texas/Mexico border that recently were hit with violent storms and tornadoes. He issued state disaster proclamations for Maverick County as a result of the damage and loss of life sustained in the Eagle Pass area, and for Moore and Swisher counties in North Texas where tornadoes caused heavy damage. Perry has also requested that the president issue disaster declarations for all three counties.
Tornados and damaging winds were reported from Denton County in north central Texas to Maverick County at the Texas/Mexico border.
The Associated Press reported that 10 people were killed in the storms along the border. Two schools were reportedly destroyed and more than 20 homes demolished. Five victims apparently were in one mobile home.
In Dallas, where winds peeled the roofs off some buildings, American Airlines canceled about 200 flights and diverted about 80 others, spokesman Billy Sanez told the AP.
