Deadline to Apply for La.’s Road Home Aid is July 31

May 31, 2007

Louisiana homeowners with damage from hurricanes Katrina and Rita have until July 31 to apply for aid through the state’s Road Home program, officials announced May 29.

The program gives out grants of up to $150,000 per homeowner. Insurance proceeds and federal disaster aid are counted against the grant award, and homeowners who lived in a flood plain and didn’t have flood insurance receive a penalty on their award.

“Homeowners with damages to their homes who have not yet applied should do so right away,” Michael Taylor, director of the Disaster Recovery Unit in the governor’s Office of Community Development, which is overseeing the Road Home, said in a news release.

More than 140,000 people have applied for aid through the program so far, and 22,174 have received grants. The $7.5 billion program, however, is estimated to be short of the dollars it will need to give aid to all who are eligible, and the state is looking for ways to fill a gap that is estimated to be $2.9 billion.

Applications can be filed online at www.road2LA.org or over the phone by calling 1-888-ROAD-2-LA.
