Louisiana Medical Mutual Insurance Company announced that John E. Lemoine, M.D., who currently serves as the chairman of the Board, chief executive officer and president of the Louisiana, plans to retire at the end of this year. However, Dr. Lemoine will retain the position of chairman of the Board, effective Jan. 1, 2008.

According to the company, LAMMICO has grown exponentially under Dr. Lemoine’s leadership: from 93 employees to a current workforce of 133; serving more than 3,000 policyholders to a current subscriber base of over 5,000 and doubling assets from $165 million to $332 million. Dr. Lemoine was also instrumental in expanding LAMMICO’s reach into the neighboring state of Arkansas in 2007.

Dr. Lemoine has been associated with LAMMICO since shortly after the company’s founding in 1981. He has held various positions with the Metairie based company over the last 26 years, including senior vice president of LAMMICO’s Underwriting Committee, member and then chairman of the company’s Board of Directors, CEO and president. A family practitioner from Bunkie, La., Dr. Lemoine earned a medical degree from the Louisiana State University School of Medicine.

Thomas H. Grimstad, M.D., will succeed Dr. Lemoine as president/CEO, effective Jan. 1. For the last two years, Dr. Grimstad has held a staff position at LAMMICO as senior vice president of Underwriting. Previous to his full-time position with the company, Dr. Grimstad served as a member of the LAMMICO Claims Committee which reviews information regarding malpractice claims made against LAMMICO insureds. He was also a member of the Risk Management Committee which reviews LAMMICO’s educational programs and provides feedback regarding physician perceptions of LAMMICO’s risk management activities.

Dr. Grimstad received a doctorate of medicine in 1973 from the Tulane University School of Medicine. He worked in the private practice of consultative pulmonary disease at the West Jefferson Medical Center from 1977 until 2005.
