Albert Betts, who recently resigned from his post as Commissioner of Workers’ Compensation at the Texas Department of Insurance, is joining Thompson Coe Cousins & Irons LLP as a partner in the Insurance Law and Governmental and Legislative Advocacy Sections. Betts will join the firm on Oct. 1, 2008.
Betts was appointed as Commissioner of Workers’ Compensation in 2005 to oversee changes to the Texas workers’ compensation system mandated by the state legislature in 2005.
He has significant experience working with legislative staff and leadership, as well as the governor’s office, on workers’ compensation laws and policy issues. Betts has testified in numerous hearings before the House Business & Industries Committee, the Senate State Affairs Committee, the House Insurance Committee, the Senate Finance Committee and the House Appropriations Committee.
Betts previously served the Texas Department of Insurance as chief-of-staff and director of Human Resources for the Department between 1999 and 2002, and held the post of general counsel for the State Office of Risk Management (1994-1998).
Betts received both his undergraduate degree and his Doctorate of Jurisprudence from the University of Texas at Austin.
