Students of Insurance at Texas Universities Receive Scholarships

April 23, 2009

The Insurance Council of Texas (ICT) has awarded academic scholarships to 12 students at the University of Texas at San Antonio, Huston-Tillotson University and the University of Texas Pan American in Edinburg.

The University of Texas at San Antonio scholarship recipients were Calley Brahm, Safoora Sohaib, Gregory English, Kimberly Cox and Selvin Guevara. UT San Antonio professor Ron Sweet said his students had demonstrated a dedication to their studies as evidenced by their strong GPAs and endorsement from their professors.

“This is quite an accomplishment especially given that many of the recipients also have full time jobs or are pursing very difficult actuarial exams while completing their degrees,” Sweet said.

Huston-Tillotson University students were Lorianna Archer and Gabriel Gibbons.

Insurance Professor Jesus Piedre says both students were focused professionals that are determined to excel in their studies and succeed academically.

The University of Texas at Pan American scholarship recipients were Juan Chavez, Jon Obie Valdivia, Juan Perales, Annisa Olivia Chavez and Marcos Cantu.

Dr. Teofilo Ozuna, Dean of the College of Business at UT Pan American, enthusiastically supported the College’s ICT selection committee’s recommendation “that these students meet the criteria established by the ICT for these scholarships and have an interest in insurance and/or risk management as a career choice.”

ICT’s Education Foundation was created recently to administer both academic and achievement awards that are now provided to seven Texas universities. The universities include Baylor, North Texas, UT Austin, UT San Antonio, UT Pan American, Huston-Tillotson and Texas Southern.

Since the scholarship program began in 2002, ICT has awarded $162,500 in scholarships to 136 students studying insurance and risk management.
