David Tatman of the Tatman Group and lobbyist for the Louisiana Surplus Lines Association, has outlined some of the legislation that group will be following during Louisiana’s legislative session, which opens today.
Tatman said in an e-mailed announcement that several bills, if passed, could affect the surplus lines industry in Louisiana.
He noted that the House Insurance Committee on April 29 at 9:30 a.m. will consider House Bill 333, by Rep. Kleckley, which provides for limitation on named-storm, hurricane, and wind and hail homeowner insurance deductibles. This legislation would implement the “seasonal deductible” law in Louisiana, Tatman noted.
Other insurance-related bills being tracked by Tatman include:
HB 386 by Rep. Monica: Provides for fees for renewal of surplus lines broker licenses. The legislation amends the surplus lines broker license to a two year license and adjusts the fee.
SB 290 by Sen. Quinn: Exempts surplus lines insurers from provisions regarding co-insurance clauses. This legislation addresses and issue related to freedom of form for surplus lines and a court case that challenged that freedom.
More than 1,100 bills have been pre-filed for consideration in the nine-week session, according to the Associated Press.
