“Muddy water” is precisely the reason that the state should not be in the business of executing prisoners. That we can only have this debate ‘post mortem’ makes it even starker.

People can and do make mistakes. Witnesses remember inaccurate details. Informants lie or have ulterior motives. Overzealous prosecutors withold evidence or pursue those charged despite not being certain of their guilt. Juries can get it wrong. Our criminal justice system is far from perfect.

Willingham very well may have committed the heinous act which he was charged with, convicted of, and executed for. But maybe he didn’t. And that’s the point.

He was executed in just three years from the time of the occurrence but yet it is going to take “years” to prosecute Jared Loughner!!!! What the heck send him to Texas.

      Kitty…

      1991 until 2004 = 13 years.

Otherwise, I agree… It shouldn’t take more than a few minutes to conduct the trial and conviction of Loughner, much less “years”.

Just to add a couple of facts to the story: Willingham’s wife said he confessed to her and don’t overlook the life insurance policies that were taken out shortly before the fire.

Mickey makes an extremely compelling argument.

Mickey makes an extremely _circumstantial_ arguement regarding the life insurance policies and is believing that the wife isn’t lying.
