I recently read about a young British student who was arrested by the Brits and will shortly be extradited to the United States for a ten year jail sentence — just like the 10 years maximum Oklahoma now doles out for killing a human being with a vehicle while intoxicated.

You might ask what horrific crime was committed by this young man to warrant his own government throwing him to the wolves for a potential sentence on par with a newly extended punishment for intoxicated vehicular murder. This kid, while at university, ran a website that worked like a search engine. The site was a collection of links to other unrelated web sites that streamed TV shows, something which can just as easily be found using a Google search. Really. That’s it. He ran this website in the UK and has never been to the U.S. He might get to visit the US– for a ten year jail stay in a federal prison for breaking US laws (from the UK, apparently!).

I realize this is an apples & oranges comparison, but it shows the utter insanity of our criminal “justice” system. We would put a man in prison for life without parole for stealing a 99 cent soda (three strikes & mandatory minimums) and force a college student to be extradited to US federal prison for 10 years for running a text website, but until now you could go out, get totally blasted, and murder a kid with a 4,000 dually pickup and only get a maximum of five years in jail.

    Am I missing something?
