Never let a crisis go to waste. The only failure here was one of common sense.

The plant was there YEARS before the nursing home, houses or school. But yet the city allowed development around the plant.

God bless the volunteer fire depts but, their expertise is basic structure fires and grass fires. They don’t have the training to respond to a situation presented here. I’ll bet that there had never been a site visit by the local VFD or the county fire Marshal (if there even is one). You never ever put water on ammonium nitrate.

The state of Texas is grossly remiss in providing training and funding for VFD. Over 90% of fire protection in Texas is provided by a local VFD. No VFD, no insurance. No insurance, no mortages. No mortages, no homes / farms etc.

An injured VFD member is on his / her own. No workers comp. Shame.
