Mayor of West, Texas, an Independent Agent, Named Trusted Choice Hometown Hero

The Independent Insurance Agents of Texas (IIAT) has named Tommy Muska of Muska Insurance Services in West as its newest Trusted Choice Hometown Hero.

Hometown Hero recognizes Trusted Choice insurance agents who go above and beyond to help their communities.

People in the city of West know Tommy Muska as a family man, the owner of Muska Insurance Services and the mayor of their city. On April 17, 2013, his friends and neighbors knew Muska as a quick-thinking volunteer firefighter who helped guide people to safety and treat the injured.

On that day, the small city of 2,800 residents near Waco was changed forever when the West Fertilizer Co. exploded with a force that leveled nearby homes and reaped widespread destruction. Fifteen people lost their lives and hundreds were injured.

Muska was en route to the blaze when the plant exploded killing several of his firefighter friends. Immediately after the explosion, he organized a triage on the high school football field to treat the injured.

As West’s mayor, Muska faced the national media and consoled the grieving families of those who lost their lives. He also used his insurance experience to help many of West’s citizens get their lives back on track.

“Like many independent agents, Tommy’s commitment to his community comes before his business interests. We are proud that one of the key figures responding to this catastrophe was a long-time IIAT member,” said IIAT Executive Director David VanDelinder.
