Officials: Arkansas Wildfires Burned 14,652 Acres in 2015

Arkansas forestry officials say wildfires engulfed fewer acres in 2015 when compared to the previous year.

Data released by the Arkansas Forestry Commission on Friday said 14,652 acres burned last year, compared to 16,687 acres in 2014.

Saline County had the most wildfires last year, with 76. Grant had 61 and Miller County had 46.

As far as acreage, Searcy County wildfires burned 1,875 acres, Saline County fires burned 765 acres and Calhoun County saw 662 acres burned.

The forestry commission says the top two causes of Arkansas wildfires are burning debris piles, including leaves, brush and trash, and arson.

Arkansas wildfires burned more than 34,000 acres in each year from 2010 to 2012. State Forester Joe Fox says weather helped suppress wildfires last year.
