Sounds to me the big losers are the blood-sucking lawyers! Amazing that I haven’t heard about this problem here. I live in hailstorm USA yet don’t know of any attorney’s arriving along with roofers to file lawsuits.
It has happened in my town of 113,000 twice in the past 5 years. First the public adjusters descended on our town then the attorneys started putting up billboards. Most insurance companies are going to treat you fairly. Public adjusters convince an insured that no company will be fair and take 12% of the claim after they have run the claim costs up.
Property insurance rates skyrocketed and everyone has a 1% – 3% w/h deductible now. They shot themselves in the foot. Several insureds were in litigation so their roofs weren’t fixed for a fe years resulting in companies excluding roof. You can’t fix greed. You can tell an insured that they’re shooting themselves in the foot, but they can’t withstand the temptation to make big money on their roof claim.
I have yet to hear of public adjustors showing up right after one of our hail storms. Maybe the public adjustors and attorneys leave us alone since about 90% of Wyoming is well armed! Our biggest problem is the “roofers” who show up (usually on the same plane as our CAT team) and get caught creating “wind/hail” damage to roofs just so they get a roofing job or start a job after receiving initial payment from the homeowner and then take off never to be heard from again.
Not sure where you’re at, but I’m not seeing where rates have “skyrocketed”. Most companies I’m writing with haven’t had a significant increase in Texas in 4 or 5 years, and some have decreased rates slightly. This includes north Texas…
