Auto-Owners Stops Writing New Business in Florida
Auto-Owners Insurance has decided to discontinue writing new policies in Florida.
The company said the decision is in response to recent Florida legislation created during a special legislative session on insurance costs and hurricane preparedness and intensified by Emergency Rule 07-01 which prohibits cancellations and non-renewals.
"In Florida, Auto-Owners Insurance Company and Owners Insurance Company will accept no new business," said John R. Lindauer, Auto-Owners' Corporate Communications Manager.
He said that Southern-Owners Insurance Co., a subsidiary of the Michigan-based company, will continue to accept new business, subject to its underwriting rules and guidelines.
As of the end of calendar year 2006, Auto-Owners had 283,983 active policies in Florida according to Lindauer. He said the company, which has operated in Florida since 1952, uses independent insurance agents exclusively.
Company wide, Auto-Owners is represented by over 34,000 independent agents in more than 5,900 agencies in 25 states.
