Fen-Phen Lawyers’ Trial Attracts Spectators to Kentucky Courtroom

As the trial continues for three lawyers in the fen-phen diet drug case, the assortment of spectators to the Kentucky courtroom varies with the day.

Lisa Swiger sat in the gallery in U.S. District Court at Covington wearing a surgical mask because the drug sickened her.

Lawyer Burr Travis of Florence said he attended the trial last Friday to hear evidence of the money trail. He says the case has changed the way those in the judicial system do business.

More than two dozen people regularly have packed the courtroom of U.S. District Judge William Bertelsman, who has said the proceeding has transcended into a trial “of the whole legal system.”

Attorneys William Gallion, Shirley Cunningham Jr. and Melbourne Mills Jr. are charged with fraud — accused of stealing millions of dollars from plaintiffs they represented in a $200 million class-action settlement.
