Professional Insurance Agents of Florida and the Florida Insurance Council have agreed to work together to form an agent/insurance company alliance aimed at educating the public and the media on insurance matters.
PIA asked its members to volunteer for these efforts. The two groups worked together on other projects in the past, such as cosponsoring association forums and meetings.
Mark O’Connell, PIA’s chief executive officer said sharing of information and resources will be the key aspect of the collaboration.
“Our goal is to ensure that an accurate representation of industry issues makes its way to the public through the media,” O’Connell said.
The partnership, still in the development stage, will consist of media visits, interviews and editorial board visits. PIA member volunteers will serve as local agents providing local input on key insurance issues.
O’Connell said the groups share common concerns, making the alliance an easy decision.
“This isn’t an alliance of business interests,” O’Connell said. “Agents will not be more or less involved in company affairs, and companies will not be more or less involved in agent affairs. We do expect that this shared venture will enhance the respect each group has for the other’s role, but all we’re talking about is the sharing and dissemination of information. That has to be a very good thing.”
