Mississippi College Gets OK for Post-Katrina Projects

August 25, 2008

The Mississippi College Board gave the University of Southern Mississippi approval to spend $27.5 million to rebuild its Gulf Coast campuses devastated by Hurricane Katrina three years ago.

The money will be a combination of insurance proceeds and federal reimbursements.

USM President Martha Saunders, who attended the Aug. 21 meeting of the College Board in Jackson, said the approval means the university can start rebuilding.

One of the projects is the Marine Education Center that had been located at Point Cadet in Biloxi. The new proposed site is at Cedar Point. The $8 million facility will be about 34,000 square feet and contain classrooms, faculty offices and exhibit space.
