Democratic state Sen. Parker Griffith won a hotly contested election to the open 5th Congressional District seat in north Alabama, keeping the seat in his party’s column.
Griffith’s win allows Democrats to maintain their more than 100-year hold on the district. Griffith narrowly defeated Huntsville insurance executive Wayne Parker, a Republican, who was making his third race for the 5th district seat.
