A truck operator killed at a West Virginia surface mine on Tuesday has been identified.
State mine agency spokeswoman Jama Jarrett said Wednesday that 28-year-old Mark Gray of Belle died Tuesday when his truck backed into a sediment pond at Catenary Coal’s Samples mine.
Jarrett says Gray worked for contractor Hawkeye Construction of Robinson Creek, Ky. She says Gray had six years of mining experience and had been at the Samples mine for about three months.
The accident remains under investigation.
Catenary is a subsidiary of St. Louis-based Patriot Coal, which has operations in West Virginia and Kentucky.
The fatality is the second in West Virginia this year and the ninth nationally.
