I think it is unfortunate that as a respected periodical you played the gay discrimintion card as a headline in this story.
It is shamefull that you couldn’t focus on the crminality without addressing the lesbian, homosexual issue to grab the headlines. I guess that is how you want to be respected. You bring shame on your house and all of ours. Thanks for your mature postion.
The crime is distinguished by the circumstances that surround it, namely anti-gay messages spray painted on their property and messages threatening to commit arson and murder them because they are lesbians…and then their home burned to the ground. Anti-gay discrimination is indeed a factor in this case, and that the insurance company is now alleging that the couple burned their own house down, despite these threats, it is also appropriate to bring that issue up.
There’s no card being played. Maybe if the case had not been proceeded by threats of arson, this wouldn’t be an issue.
There have been many cases of staged discrimination by “victims” committing insurance fraude. They realize most insurers will not want the bad publicity of denying the claim. There have been documentaries on this type of fraud, racial, sexual orientation, nationality etc. as ways to score a quick buck. The evidence in this case must be strong enough for ANPAC to deny and prosecute.
Mike,
I see your point. If we are considering this plain old arson, no need to mention sexual orientation. But if we are considering this a hate crime, I see no problem mentioning it. It is, after all, central to WHY the crime was committed. Why not put it in the headlines?
This is how the media works. Attention grabbing headlines are nothing new.
I agree that the ‘gay couple’ was not necessary unless the reporter was going to include that this could be a ‘hate crime’ but since the sheriff isn’t doing anything to anybody, they are in civil court! what a mess…another state that refused to give their Ins Dept enforcement powers to go after this insurance company!! Many southern and western states refuse to give their Ins Depts enforcement powers so the ins carriers do whatever they like, hence high rates and claims not being paid promptly or properly. That is why they want National Insurance Div to enforce what they won’t do ’cause it isn’t politically helpful to the State Legislators and their donors.
Hey Jess. Richard could be a pre-op transgender, a lesbian trapped in a mans body, and soon to be Raylene. He, I mean she, is merely testing the waters.
What difference does it make if the couple was gay, straight, A-sexual or what have you? A crime is a CRIME! There are no hate crimes, there are only crimes. If you break any law, any law you have committed what? A crime.
Does anyone know if these ladies are hot?
Richard, did you read the article? Even if they are hot, you don’t stand a chance.
I get it, Richard. These ladies are “hot” – they are accused of setting fire to their house – Nobody else got it! Bad pun, but funny!
Thanks for having a sense of humor Richard! I think more people need one :)
