I am happy to proclaim I am a Jesus freak. What’s not to love about the Creator that cared enough for you to die for your sins so you may have an opportunity for eternal life? To each his own though. :)

I guess maybe if you’re of a Buddhist, Taoist, Shintoist, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu etc, etc. faith, there might be issues.

There may be one path for you, but that doesn’t necessarily mean its the right path for someone else. :)

But good on ya for being more open minded and welcoming than most Jesus freaks.

Perhaps you should be a “Jesus-ist” instead?

Most Jesus freaks I’ve met are singularly unpleasant people to be around. You seem much more normal than that. :)

If God was more in the “world” there would be less people turning to addiction. Kudo’s to the judge for being the cayalyst possibly to stop this woman’s problem!

Except the Covanent prohibits God from being more in the “world.”

so what happen here with the separation of church and state? even though the defendant agreed, it should not have been allowed… the crime was not church related in any way… i like the fact she agreed to read the bible, but it should be noted – it was not a requirement…

      That’s a very good question wudchuck…

The judge certainly stumbled over the “church and state” bit.

She agreed, which is perfectly fine (and may do some good, who knows)

But it could’ve boiled into a whole nasty mess.

Should of had her read an insurance contract, that would be real punishment.

This is insane. I can’t believe that this is happening in a modern society. Everyone is entitled to their own belief. If you want to believe in the bible that is fine, but it should not be forced on anyone. How would religious people like it if we made them read Darwin? Not only do I disagree with the idea of forced bible reading, but the bible has nothing to do with this.

I read this article and was absolutely floored. As Jon says, religion isn’t a one size fits all thing. I would be livid if some judge required that I read the bible as part of my punishment. I’m not christian, and my beliefs aren’t dictated by some story book. I feel that this judge be reprimanded and he should have to read the part of the law that dictates that there be a separation of church and state, and then to write a summary of it, then maybe he’d refrain from adding his own religious leanings in his sentencing. Just my opinion.

here’s the problem w/ur statement… u did not read the whole article… in it stated, that he gave the defendant an option on the sentence to read the bible as part of the judgement and she agreed… it was not mandated… i think he might have added more time onto the punishment if she had not agreed… he’ll not get any reprimand for adding that to the judgement… who knows, it might help that individual think a little more clearly about what they had done… to you story book or not, it provides a good sense on how to live and love your neighbor…

I read the whole article. She made herself look very bad in this situation. The judge made the suggestion and she wants to demonstrate that she is willing to take steps to improve and be compliant so she agreed. I don’t have a problem with her wanting to change and own up to her mistake. I just don’t feel that it should have been suggested that she read the bible, whether or not she agreed to it once it had been suggested.

Reading the Bible is not nearly as important as understanding it.

The assignment was to read and write a summary on the Book of Job in the Old Testament. Jesus and Christianity are not in the Bible until the New Testament.
