While the possibility of injury exists, so does the possibility of no injury. Pit bulls and other breeds should be judged on individual merit. Exercise caution, maintain discipline – yes! I would say the same of all animals. But to arbitrarily put them down, no!

I read a story in the paper not that long ago about a woman from SF (I think) who was 8 mos pregnant – she was mauled by the family Pit Bull while the husband was at work. That dog was not “trained” to harm or kill, yet, it did. I don’t EVER read stories about other breeds of dogs turning on their owners, just Pit Bulls. Those dogs scare me. I’m fine with them being banned.

So because they scare you they should be banned? Fail!

The problem with breed specific legislation is it doesn’t target the root of the problem, the dog owners.

That is with any big scarry dog…. My male cousin got ripped apart because of a rottweiller and you dont see that in the news. Animals are animals. If they ban one breed they should ban all breeds (big Dogs)

American Veterinary Medical Association and the ASPCA disagree with breed-specific bans. They do actual research and aren’t manic haters of everything. My dog sounds just like described, and he one a kissing contest in front of thousands of people and other dogs this year. He kissed people of all ages, and is the sweetest in the world. It’s people who are horrible, not the dogs.

So if it all the fault of the people that own them how does that change? It doesn’t once the ban is lifted it will be just like it is all over the country, people who should not own Pit Bulls will get them.

Yes, and right now those who shouldn’t have pit bulls either ignore the ban or they own other breeds such as the Bull Mastiff or Akita, or German Shepard.

Breed specific legislation is much like gun control. It only harms law abiding citizens.

The proof of your statement would be in a place like Miami with a 23 year old ban seeing bites and attacks from these supposed alternatives to pit bulls skyrocketing to pit bull levels. We don’t see that. In fact, what we see in Miami-Dade has half the per capita bites as Hillsborough county FL even though Hillsborough is more affluent. The ban is working. Keep it.

Of course veterinarians oppose BSL. Every time a pit bull attacks someone’s pet or livestock, it means hundreds (often thousands) in some vet’s pocket!

As for the ASPCA, people associated with such organizations will do ANYTHING to save a dog including placing human beings (including children) at risk. Recently, within a period of only a month to five weeks, rescue pit bulls in Arkansas, Georgia, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Tennessee attacked someone after being adopted and in five of these cases, the person attacked was a child. All six of these pit bulls had passed the temperament tests with flying colors and been pronounced “safe” for adoption by veterinarians and others who claim to be pit bull “experts.”

I am so sick of pit bull advocates.it is the difference between owning a beebee gun and a shotgun. look at these websites and state into the faces of the little kids who would still be alive if they were bitten by any other kind of dog. Pitbulllattacks.org fatalpitbullattacks.com. You can’t be that naive. Pit bulls are dangerous creatures and when they attack they are savage and brutal.much more so than any other breed
    of dog.please open you’re eyes.

“A recent report by the American Veterinary Medical Association said pit bulls are not necessarily more prone to biting than other breeds such as German shepherds, Rottweilers, Jack Russell terriers and even collies….”

Whether pit bulls are “more prone to biting” is IRRELEVANT! The problem isn’t whether or not they bite more than other dogs, it is the amount of damage these 4-legged sharks do when they do bite! Within a period of a few weeks last summer, pit bulls in Florida, Arizona and California ripped limbs from adult human beings and a pit bull in Colorado scalped a woman. Earlier this year in Florida, a pit bull ripped the arm and leg from a woman in the Orlando area and just a couple weeks ago, a veterinarian employee in Panama City lost her arm to a pit bull. I challenge any pit bull advocate to cite a case in the US of any dog other than a pit bull-type dismembering or scalping an adult human being in recent years.

I think having a ban against ALL dogs of a certain breed is ridiculous, since every dog has a different personality. Pitbulls are like any other dog when they are born, normal and sane. They become aggresive, attacking zombies because that’s why they are taught and trained to do by some morons who aquire them for that purpose. In Miami Dade I can understand why the ban was put in place, there are more than a fair share of people who fit the ‘bad owner’ description but these people have Pitbulls anyways even with the ban. These people should be punished, not all dogs who happen to be the same breed.

Persons have “personalities,” dogs have “temperaments” or “dispositions.” And pray tell, how is anyone going to possibly evaluate the dispositions of every dog in Miami-Dade? Additionally, most pit bulls that attack family members — and the majority of pit bull attacks that result in death are by the “family pet” — have no history of aggressive behavior. That’s why the owners always say, “I cannot understand what happened” he/she was “always such a good dog….” And NO, pit bulls are NOT like “any other dog” when they are born. As with all breeds of dogs, certain characteristics are bred into pit bulls and while training and the way they are treated can certainly impact their behavior, if they ever do attack, those inbred characteristics surface and someone, or someone’s pet or livestock, usually ends up badly injured or dead!

You are talking out of you ass, you have no valid points. There are countless stories of people that have been saved by pitbulls. The pitbull that jumped in front of a train to save his owner and ended up without legs is one of many other stories. Pitbulls do tend to do more damage if they attack, but not all pitbulls are aggressive. It has been proven over and over that BSL does nt work. If a kid was mauled by a german shepherd or another big dog it would also be dead.

Dogs are not the problem-people are. Dogs are not bred to be bad. As a matter of fact, dogs are attracted to humans as friends and companions-its been proven in study after study-the one in National Geo a couple of years ago does a great job of outlining the special relationship between man and dog.
But dogs are like anything which can be dangerous if not used right by their companions-if the people owning them aren’t trained to properly care for a dog, and if the dog is trained to be mean and aggressive as opposed to gentle and kind, then bad things will happen regardless of breed.
And I read where a dog which LOOKED like apit bull was put down in England for some of the same reasons others have posted about being afraid of them-the dog had never bitten anyone or even showed aggressive behavior, but the breed was banned there and so many objected to the dogs appearance as a pit bull that it was put down.
Shame on those people and shame on those angry and misinformed people who as a first step will ban a breed, then anything that looks like a breed and then start putting them down-all in the name of fear and ignorance. And these dogs trust and love us unconditionally-for those that advocate this, let them look straight in that dogs eyes and inject them themselves and then tell me its right.
We are becoming a sad and decrepit society when we treat our loving companions and friends that way.

Pitts are no different from any other dog. I know a rottrwillers that is just waiting on ripping someones skull apart. I also know a mastiff mixed with a great dane that is aggressive and that dog is the size of horse who will tame that thing when it goes bonkers. I have had pitts and I also have had many other big bread dogs like bull terrier (another aggresive breed)and they are no different from one another. The people are the ones that should be banned from dade.

The majority of the people that want them banned are people that have not even came accross a pit not once. How is anyone allowed to even vote when they have never had one or delt with that breed to even dare to speculate. That is why the world is going down to shits because of people that stereotype.

I love my pitbull. I must say that he is better than some humans that I know. I’ve always said it’s the way you “raise” your dog. If you teach him/her how to fight, they’re going to do anything to make you (the pack leader) happy. It’s the same as when you raise your child; if you teach your child how to steal or fight, your child will do anything to make you happy. It will always be about how you raise your “child”. I do agree that there’s stupid people out there that MAKE their pitbulls fight & they DO inject them with steroid, but like I said, they are stupid. The dog shouldn’t have to be the one to suffer b/c the owner has a peanut for brains. The owner should be the one locked up & do their time. Or BAN THE DAMN OWNER. Lol! A Pitbull is just like any other dog & they deserve to be equal.
People fight chickens, you don’t see chickens being illegal.
