Way to go Alabama. More states should adopt your program.

WV starts something very similar in Jan 2014. I think enforcement will be a nightmare, though, because it calls for surrender of the license plate if the insurance is cancelled for any reason by either the insured or the insurance company. Eventually it should reduce late-pay cancellations, but I predict a steep learning curve among consumers.

Its about time irresponsible drivers either get insurance or get off the road, the majority of alabamians are paying higer premiums because of the un-insured motorists,i’m thankful for this new law that will refuse registration to anyone without proper insurance ID.

This is horrendous! Why should a state be able to require you to purchase a product to use a pruduct for which you have already paid? Wake up people your wealth has and is being siphoned off by these leeches!

As an agent I can tell you with hard facts, nothing has changed with requiring Alabamians to have Auto Liability Insurance. The law didn’t change, just the verification, enforcement and amount of fines.

The real difference is who is enforcing the law, it’s not the police.. but revenue officers at the county issuing the license plates.

As it was before, a motorist buys insurance when it’s time to renew or issue a new a car tag and get an insurance card to show officials. Then the motorist then stops paying for the insurance after one month, but still have the insurance card to show police if stopped for speeding. Although the police have a access (a desktop link to the AMLI verification system) not all are using it.

It is not happening, if you’ve got your “papers”, insurance isn’t an issue. There are two primary reasons the police are not checking, the first is the inaccuracy of the data from the AMLI System and the second is revenve. The Alabama Department of Public Safety didn’t get any of the additaionl funds to help enforce this massive initiative, all those funds went to the budgets of the Alabama Department of Revenue.

It’s just a matter of Alabama politics, business as usual.
