Despite the challenges currently presented by prescription opiate pain killers, I am troubled by this news for several reasons. Medicine should be practiced according to what is best for the patient according to the physician–not according to what the U.S. government desires. Will this conviction make physicians reluctant to prescribe medically-necessary medicines because the patient might actually be an undercover agent lying about the symptoms? The answer is ‘of course, that’s the point.’ Also, ‘nearly 3,000 units’ sounds like a lot, until you consider that 3000/50 is 60 pills, or a 1 month prescription for a 2x/daily dose.
