An Eastman, Georgia, insurance agent has been charged with insurance fraud and forgery in connection with homeowners and crop insurance policies she sold in the middle Georgia.
Officials said warrants have been issued for the arrest of Sarah Amber Winans, 41, principal agent of ABC Insurance Agency Eastman. Winans has been charged with seven count of insurance fraud and three counts of forgery.
Winans is alleged to have defrauded at least $16,000 from her clients.
“Our investigation indicates that this agent was apparently preying on citizens in the middle Georgia region,” Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens said. “We believe Sarah Winans pocketed her clients’ money for homeowners and crop insurance coverage instead of forwarding the premiums to the insurance companies.”
The investigation into Winans’ agency and business practices has been conducted over the past several months, according to Hudgens. He said the investigation is continuing.
Insurance fraud is a felony with a penalty of two to 10 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $10,000.
