Insurer Settles Alabama Sheriff’s Assault Case for $625K

August 4, 2014

The Madison County Sheriff’s Department has reached a settlement with a Tennessee man who said he was beaten by several deputies and wrongfully arrested after an argument at a bar.

Attorney Hank Sherrod said that he and his client, Robert Bryant, are pleased with the $625,000 settlement. Sherrod told AL.com that the fact that the county’s insurance company is paying the settlement doesn’t mean deputies who were involved in the August 2012 incident have been held accountable.

Byrant has said he got in an argument at a pool hall with a sheriff’s deputy and was later ordered out of his car and was assaulted by other deputies.

The sheriff’s office released a statement saying the settlement isn’t an admission of wrongdoing. Sheriff Blake Dorning says the case was settled to avoid litigation costs.
