Investigators with the California Department of Insurance (CDI) Criminal Investigations Branch’s Fraud Division assisted deputies from the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Department in the arrest of a convicted sex offender on five counts of workers’ compensation insurance fraud.
Mario Moreno, 45, was arrested in Mariposa and booked into the Mariposa County Jail on a $250,000 bail felony warrant. The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office, Special Prosecutions Unit is prosecuting the case.
The criminal investigation conducted by CDI’s Inland Empire Regional Office revealed that Moreno purportedly sustained a work-related injury while employed in Fontana. During the processing of the claim, Moreno allegedly made several misrepresentations concerning his physical abilities to his treating physicians and in sworn depositions. He was also videotaped performing certain activities that he allegedly stated he could not do.
Republic Indemnity Insurance Company paid a total of $242,835 on this claim. Moreno served time in prison for burglary and child molestation and is subject to the three strikes law. He will be transported to Riverside County for court proceedings.
