Tennis ball-sized chunks of concrete falling from a crumbling span of Interstate Highway 5 forced the California Highway Patrol to shut down freeway lanes for hours.

The incident marked the third time this year that falling concrete tied up traffic in Oceanside, Calif. There haven’t been any injuries.

The CHP closed three northbound freeway lanes for more than two hours, saying the crumbling overpass posed a danger to motorists and pedestrians below on Oceanside Boulevard.

California Department of Transportation officials say engineers are confident in the bridge integrity. Caltrans says the interstate overpass wasn’t designed to handle the amount of big-rig traffic using the span.

Caltrans has scheduled a $500,000 repair.
