To improve working conditions and reduce workers’ compensation insurance claims, the Nevada Board of Examiners has approved spending $1.7 million to move Nevada Insurance Division workers out of a pigeon-plagued office building that made some employees sick.
Pigeons were found in the division’s leased building about a month ago. A chemical spray was used and the heating and cooling system was replaced.
But workers reported feeling ill, and the governor’s office shut down the office for a day. Administrators don’t know if the effects were caused by the birds or chemicals.
Chief of Staff Robin Reedy said about 75 people work in the office and some will be transferred to other locations until the new building is ready. Others will be on paid leave until the new office is open for business.
The Board of Examiners made up of the governor, attorney general and secretary of state subsequently approved a five-year lease for new office space.
