It is sad but this is SOP for most departments. Last thing LE wants is for more people to be in the line of fire. Not certain about California but in most jurisdictions Police and Fire do not have a legal obligation to render aid so doubt that this one will go very far.

Same thing happened at Columbine, even though the gunmen had committed suicide. Don’t think those suits went very far either.

Unfortunately, in these situations, the police have to consider the safety of the paramedics and others when there is an armed person loose in the area. Until they are certain that the danger of more casualties is over or at least minimumized, they must exercise restraint. Sad, but true.

I have to agree with the officers. They made the right decision and the family is still grieving. I think that once they understand what actually occurred it will be better.
I have friends that are Paramedics and EMTs and they are more than willing to get to the patient no matter the risk, but it’s the officer’s responsibility to ensure their safety. I am not sure how I would sleep at night if I made a choice that lost 5 lives just to save 1. I don’t think this will get very far either and the family will learn to deal with this and should have some closure.
