This is a functional issue of our country no longer being a melting pot where everything is blended but rather a tossed salad where everyone keeps their own identity first and we cater to the lettuce, tomato, cucumbers individually. Immigrants were anticipated in the past to mold to the country’s national identity rather than have the country create laws to protect their singular heritage. I was taught God, family, country when growing up but I guess that dates me somewhat. I was last on the list. Even so, I liked the priorities.
What all of you are forgetting is no-one from Hawaii immigrated to the United States. The Unites States immigrated to Hawaii and then took over. Hawaiian, along with English, is their official state language.
And please read more carefully. They are talking about the test to obtain a drivers license, not street and road signs.
Libby! The majority of people living in Hawaii ARE immigrants. They are from the various Asian nations. A large portion of immigrants are from the Philippines, Japan, Korea and China. There are also Australians, Germans, and Samoans. Don’t forget the Samoans. The percentage of NATIVE Hawaiians is probably less than 30%. Maybe even closer to 10%. I lived there for 14 years. My brother STILL lives there. It truly is a conglomeration of nationalities.
That may be so, but it does not change the fact that we took Hawaii from the Hawaiians, not the other way around. It’s in their state constitution that Hawaiian and English (almost said American LOL) are their official languages. Why is it wrong to have the driving test in both official languages?
is there a legal obligation to offer it in another language(s)?
if so, why?
and where do you stop?
next thing you know every interstate sign will be produced in multiple languages. because that will be cost efficient.
