Sir I am with you 100%. I don’t care if it is Commercial or Personal. I get so fustrated when a customer states I want minimum limits that the state requires. I have them look right out the window by my desk and ask a simple question. How many of those vehicles sitting at the light is $10,000 or less. Now mind you the cars sitting there are brand new. The look at me and tell me none of them. Exactly so if you only purchase the minimum limits that is all the insurance carrier has to pay out. So that means you can be sued for the difference. Now lets talk about the um/uim and the medical. The famous line I hear is I don’t want to purchase medical for them. I always ask another wonderful question. Who is driving the vehicle they always say they are, so your passenger is not in control of how you drive right? They say I am a great driver. That may be true but can you control how the other drivers are on the road. Well no exactly that is why it is a great idea for you to carry the coverage. It is not that expensive and you prevent from being sued. I also always tell my customers your passengers can say I would never sue you. Wrong big time let them get hurt and can’t work see what happens then. We live in a sue happy society now a days. I always use the 3 big c’s care, custody and control. Passengers don’t have them. Wake up insurance carriers and state’s with the low limits. You don’t look out the public and their finances. As insurance agent’s the customers think we are trying to sell them coverage that they really don’t need. No as a insurance agent I am trying to protect you financially.

You must not sell to the NON standard industry. I do. They will buy minimum limits only and ONLY because theyre forced to.

What about the state (CA) that has a low cost auto insurance program that offers LESS than the stated FR limits. Low cost auto is 10/20… state financial responsibility is 15/30. Why?

What about the commercials that are silent all together on coverage? The lizzard never talks about coverage, just time.

The lizard and Progressive and Liberty Mutual and the rest fail to mention your credit matters almost as much as your driving history. I think that should be illegal.

For me, those Liberty Mutual commercials are the worst!

Great article. Minimum limits in most States won’t even cover someones medical costs if the accident is even somewhat serious. The premium difference to increase personal auto limits is so minimal that I find it relatively easy to convince a client to select a higher alternative. What I find more frustrating are the more technical issues like valuation type on property and blanket vs per building coverage. These things can be a little more difficult to explain to your average joe and the premium difference can be substantial.

I own an independent insurance agency. We write about 2500 auto apps a MONTH. 95% are MINIMUM limits. Now a days costs are skyrocketing. Rates are climbing faster than people can pay. The DOI does NOTHING about uninsured drivers. If mandatory insurance were removed 80% of drivers would have NO insurance at all. No, its not the commercial, its the companies fault. Just something to think about. How important is not having insurance? If a cop pulls you over and you have no insurance he MIGHT give you a ticket. Then what does he do? He lets you DRIVE away without INSURANCE ! So how important is it? Not very to most.

There are a few others that also get me. Liberty’s first oil change and three wheels are just plain stupid. It is my understanding that in most jurisdictions, if your vehicle has not had the first oil change (most at 4K miles), is under 12K miles and/or less than 12 months it is considered new. So if you have not had the oil change and it is 13 months old, sorry, it is not new. The same goes 12,001 and less than 12 months. sorry, or just 12 months has passed since you bought it, sorry again. This also applies to last years model. It was a year old when you bought it. The only exception to this rule would be the production date in the door. My understanding that the 12 months applies from this date with exception of purchase before the new model year. In other words, a vehicle made in May of ’15, bought on July 1st of ’15 would be considered new until June 30th 2016, unless the odometer had ticked over the 12K limit. But you would not be entitle to a ’16 replacement, only a ’15. Liberty, stop making people feel insecure. Everyone knows that insurance is a racket, stop making it worse.
