    Good article, and it might be of interest to your readers to note that the picture is from a successful controlled burn here in Florida conducted adjacent to houses. An emphasis on controlled burning as a means to reduce natural fuels is a part of the solution, along with an honest discussion about where homes are built.

    Excellent article about some of the root causes of wildfire hazard in the U.S. Not unlike the cause of damage recently experienced during Hurricane Sandy, our regional planning safeguards need to be strengthened to protect against wildfire damage. I agree with Mr. Prusak’s comment about controlled burns; however, they must be carefully planned and conservative judgments must be made regarding weather and wildfire hazard (to prevent the type of destruction witnessed outside La Alamos several years ago). Controlled burns are more likely to succeed in protecting both the ecological integrity and safety of human land development where wildfires have been an integral part of the ecosystem in the natural world. Thank you for bringing a reasoned argument to this issue.
