At three years old your toddler is very mobile yet your parental logic probably would not allow them to walk to daycare unassisted. The same logic needs to apply to self driving vehicles. A person with the cognitive ability to manage a disrupter in travel, but may not be cognitive enough to drive, is one of the benefactors of an autonomous vehicle. Having the ability to address vehicle service interruptions and other possible dangers should be a determining factor in using this mode of transportation for anyone. An advantage of autonomous driving may not be in delivering your child to school unattended but giving you more freedom to read, do homework or just socialize during the trip. When that child is older you may find comfort in knowing they have a safer way to get home after a party.

Thank you for your very thoughtful comments. I too am hopeful this technology will bring many benefits of greater safety. I relate to your final sentiment as, today, our kids rely upon UBER and Lyft. Once skeptical of this innovative business model, we’ve come to rely upon it for safety. I’m sure similarly these advances will do the same.
