Re: Farmers Commercial Auto
Chances are that the Farmers agent quoted the commercial auto wrong. When the policy issues it will come back with an up rated premium. I would ask the client if you can take a look at the Farmers quote to make sure it is rated correctly. This agent is probably a newbie.

Re: I may terminate my agreement w/ NIA!
I terminated my contract with them. They have a deal where you have to pay them 3% for 3 years if you BOR your business. I gave them a list of policies that I wanted to BOR and called them a number of times and they never got back to me. If you roll the business from one carrier to another they don'...

Scott, You have inspired me again. I will be moving my office to Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco. My office will have a continuous laser light show, Pink Floyd music blasting, bean bag chairs, smoking room, wine served to customers, Jimmy Hendrix posters on the walls, and ties get cut off at the doo...

Re: Apartment complex wants to be additional interest
etimer,
Find another insurance company they are losers. Every company I do business with will add the complex. They want to protect themselves from law suits from their tenants. It would be similar to a commercial building requiring a lessee to carry GL.

Re: Mercury broker appointment
In Ca a Mercury broker appointment is easy to get. The problem is they only pay 5% commission so you would have to charge broker fees. If you charge a broker fee the customers will just purchase the insurance through an agency that has an agent appointment and can not charge fees. I sent in an Mercu...

Have you thought about buying an existing agency? That would seem a better idea to me. Thowing 80K out the window with nothing in return does not seem that great of a deal.

Re: Homeowners underwriting: Direct Writers vs others
Meytai, If I were in your shoes I would build up some business with a GA. However, get direct appointments as soon as possible and move the GA book over. The reason those companies are better is they are all package companies with very competitive rates that offer great coverage. McGraw is an A- com...

Re: Homeowners underwriting: Direct Writers vs others
To Meytai, The captive agents only have one company so they will load up all their risks with their one company the good with the bad so to speak. They don't have the ability to place the right risk to each carries appetite like an independent. You should find that the captive agent's premiums shoul...

Re: Self Employed vs Work for a company
I would say keep the agency. You have been in business for 18 months and you are about to turn the corner. The first couple years are the toughest. If the other partner is not pulling his weight buy him out. I think it would suck having to get a real job with a boss after owning an agency. Keep the ...
