Re: New Insurance Agency

There are many choices(cluster groups, brokers etc..) out there. Just be careful of the contracts that have a one or two year non-compete, this may not be to your advantage. Very good point, but never expect perfection to your advantage because that doesn't exist. One should research the available ...

Re: Insurance Noodle Non-Compete Clause

I think Insurance Noodle provides a great service, but there are many other organization who do the same. They key is to review their contract and the language as it relates to leaving. One size does not fit all, there are over 100 of these organizations and growing, you can search for these organiz...

Re: Insurance agencies for sale ?

Great point, learning how to run an agency isn't something you can do overnight. I think I replied to that about a year or so ago and I still hear from those who want to acquire a preferred insurance agency without experience. Here are the options: No Insurance, no business Experience: Captive Agen...

Re: non compete clause

Some states prohibit non-compete agreements to a certain extent. In some cases a client is not bound by the non-compete agreement and cannot be prohibited from choosing whom to do business with. Nevertheless, those looking to transition from being an employee to their own agency should proceed with ...

Re: Standard Non-Compete

Most non-compete agreements in California don't hold water. You might want to check with legal council first on both the validity and enforceability of a no-compete. That is so well started, furthermore this is a state specific issue, I would only hire an attorney who is familiar with your state an...

Re: non compete clause

I write about this very issue in my Guide to Starting an Independent Insurance Agency. You should abide by the non-complete, but there are ways to deal with it and win in the long run so that you can be in a much better position should a lawsuit occur. You can read the guide under "Start Up Age...

Re: Laws on where an office can be?

I have heard of no laws regarding agency location, provided that your agency is domiciled in that state you are licensed in. In the past, Insurance Agencies needed spacious offices to handle staff, file cabinets, supplies and a number of other items. Thanks to the Internet age, this has all changed....

Re: Best mgmt system for small agency

There are well over 15 different vendors who offer well over 20 different insurance agency management systems in the marketplace. The two largest vendors have been around for some time. They are Applied Systems and AMS/Vertafore. Should a new agency go with one of the larger vendors? First of all, I...

Re: New independent agency

Going through an wholesaler (MGA do not underwrite preferred business as they are really retrained to underwrite specialty business) to access the larger preferred carriers is in most cases, not the way to go. The absolutely best way to go it to becoming a member of a cluster, alliance or network gr...

Re: Getting Appointed

Most carriers have agency appointment information on their website, I would go to a carriers website and submit a request. The other option is to find the marketing representative and ask for a meeting, many will schedule an appointment to visit you in your office. You can find a marketing represent...
