Re: CIC Designation

The CIC designation is useful if you are employed by a broker or agency. The 5 courses are 3 days long followed by a 2 hour test. You will basically read a commercial general liability policy, auto policy and a homeowners policy. You will also be introduced to other policy language used to cover var...

Re: CPCU 510 woes

I started CPCU in 1972, took my time, and finished in only 20 years, 1992. At the time, I worked for Fireman's Fund and we received the option of going to the ceremony or getting $5k in stock. That's a pretty good choice. If you are going to work for a carrier, I recommend CPCU, where you will get a...

Re: Disclosure of losses from prior entity

The "other broker" is "clean sheeting" the risk, in order to obtain a premium quote under false pretenses. Most applications these days have a warranty clause stating that misrepresentation will void the insurance. Additionally, the department of insurance with jurisdiction might...

Make sure that the insurer is "admitted" or "approved" by the department of insurance for the state wherein the risk is located.

Re: Malicious prosecution coverage for Lawyer on CGL?

Dont feel bad, I am a CPCU and have a few other designations, and I have to read the CGL forms daily, when confronted with coverage questions. I suggest that you consult Black's Law Dictionary and read the explanation of "malicious prosecution." "Malicious" indicates/implies that...

Re: Would a carrier deny a property claim if.....

Keep in mind that the misrepresentation must be "material." In other words, would that misrepresentation cause an underwriter to agree to cover a risk, that he would not cover if he had known the age of the roof, in the example given. As a 30 year claims man, turned underwriter, it is like...

Re: CPCU multiple choice

I have both CPCU and CIC designations. CPCU is a graduate level program for insurance professionals. CIC is Insurance 101 for beginners. Those who say CPCU is for those that cant underwrite and cant produce, are the ones who flunked the first CPCU exam and gave up the curriculum.

Re: CPCU - Worth it right now?

Unless you have an accounting background, I would recommend the class for at least that section. If you are a self starter and can commit to 30 nights and all weekends studying, prior to the exam, self study will work. I took only the accounting class. It is a lot of material to digest, but if you c...

Re: Statutory W2 Employee

Many employers and employees think that the satus of the employee/subcontractor is determined by whether the employee/subcontractor is paid on a 1099 or a W2 basis. That is not the case in many instances. Even though an individual is paid on a 1099 basis, there are other legal tests which may indica...

Re: selling commercial vs personal lines.

You might start the decision making process by sitting down and making a plan for the remainer of your working life. Are you content with your income and dealing with the perosonal lines policies and issues, then hitting the golf course around 2 pm every day? If so, continure what you are doing. (Of...

Re: Contractor asks if he can file a claim for faulty work

If you are truly an "agent" (in the legal sense) of the insurer, you have a fiduciary duty to report the potential claim to insurer. While it appears that you are concerned with the insured's expense of replacing the floor, there may be some 3rd party liability issues that the insured has ...
